Since updating to Numbers 5.3, it no longer autosaves. After a problem caused by a video fault, I lost 5 hours worth of work - Numbers also didn't autosave. I contacted Apple support via webchat, and you can see the conversation attached.

There is no autosave option in Preferences (there is no need to turn it on). After the first Save (Menu > File > Save) Numbers will autosave.
If you did not Save at least once, autosave will not have kicked in. I'm afraid that your work is lost.

Auto save works SO LONG AS YOU DO NOT CLOSE A DOCUMENT THAT YOU HAVE NOT SAVED WITH A NAME.
Leaving unsaved documents open in Numbers an restarting will result in those documents begin saved as temporary files somewhere. If you close the unsaved (that is you have not selected a name and a location for the file), then Numbers will ask you if you want to save the file. If you close anyway, then, well, the data is gone.
If you have a Time Machine back up, you should be able to restore the temporary file
It simply reverts. You have to select EITHER "revert', 'cancel', or 'save' (see screenshot just posted). And, if the document crashes, as happened to me, any changes are lost. Same as with Excel, except with a crash, Excel tries to recover the document (with changes), whereas Numbers DOES NOT.
I'm sorry but this contradicts both what Apple Support told me (see chat transcript) and what I experience. I create new files, save them with names, but every time that I want to close any of these files, I get the message you can see in the screenshot. When the programme crashed, I lost all of the data I had been working on for several hours. I am aware of time machine backups, and have them but don't do them every hour. My frustration is with Numbers.

Please see the message below to Wayne. From what I understand from the screenshot message I posted below in response to Wayne, "revert" will "undo" the changes that I've made since I last saved the document, which would mean that I again lose all the work I've done if I haven't (expressly) "SAVED" my file.

That's interesting. I see the previous versions that I've saved - i.e., now it is 14:45, and I see that I saved it at 12:37 and before that at 11:22. These were manually saved - there's nothing in between.
I am curious what you expect to happen if you do NOT save the document?
Numbers now doesn't autosave and doesn't restore files either!!! Data lost, no solution from Apple support
