why do icons appear in the dock when i did not move them there?

IOS 12 —- New icons appear in the dock. I don’t want them there. Not sure how they get there if I don’t add them myself!

Removing app icons from bottom of screen Whenever I use an app it now appears at the bottom right side of my dock and stays there. I can remove it the usual way by dragging it upwards or into the trash but when I reopen that app it appears again. The same happens with my iPad, both having had their OSX systems upgraded. How do I remove the app icons permanently?Thanks

It is a function that you can enable or disable in Multi-Tasking. Settings>Genera>Multi-Tasking & Dock>Show suggested and recent app>Off
