Removing app icons from bottom of screen

Whenever I use an app it now appears at the bottom right side of my dock and stays there. I can remove it the usual way by dragging it upwards or into the trash but when I reopen that app it appears again. The same happens with my iPad, both having had their OSX systems upgraded. How do I remove the app icons permanently?
