I hold them til they jiggle. Move icons to left side of dock. When I let go they move back to previous position. I hate it when recently used icons automatically move to dock so I
disabled that particular feature.
You said you put them to the left of the dock. How about trying in a different location on the dock, like the middle, then once docked you can move it where you want on the dock. Also are you doing this in landscape or portrait? You can place more apps in the dock in landscape.

You don't need to hold the apps until they jiggle to move an app to the dock. Simply put your finger on it and drag it to the dock.
