What are we supposed to do if we'd like to watch Netflix or Amazon Prime?

I was just told "Safari 12 stopped support for most plugins, to include Silverlight."

Well, so now what? What is the point of using Safari if we can't do what we want to do online?

This makes zero sense to me, does Apple actually want everyone to abandon Safari?

Every browser is killing such extensions. Most no longer support Java. Or at least, greatly discourage its use. That includes Safari and Firefox.

Silverlight and Flash are both deprecated extensions that Microsoft and Adobe are killing off. Silverlight in 2021 and Flash by the end of 2020.

They're dead because HTML 5 requires no third party software to playback video. That was one of the goals. Get rid of such extensions as there are always holes in them that allow intrusion into your system.

When you get right down to it, places like Netflix and Amazon need to get off they lazy butts and stop using technology that has already been officially declared dead.

Yes that's exactly what it means... Netflix requires Safari on a Mac newer than 2012, as Allan Jones said, and what I discovered while troubleshooting my issue on the Netflix website. And Safari 12 will also not play video on Amazon Prime, without running Mojave, which I can't run on either of my Macs, since they're both pre-2012. Which means unless I can downgrade my Safari, nix on that for watching any videos on Amazon & Netflix.

It sure would've been nice if Apple warned those of us using "vintage" machines, that upgrading to Safari 12 means no more Amazon Prime & Netflix....

Why does it take so little to p*** some people off? Safari is the only browser that doesn't work correctly with CNN. Videos simply halt partway through and turn black. Instead of getting huffy about it, I simply use Firefox when I want to view their site.

Besides, you've already provided your own solution.

Yes, it works with every other browser!

So use one of those.

Amen to that, Kurt!! For years now, they've been more concerned with adding more bells & whistles, that are needed less & less, while ignoring making an OS that's steady, reliable, smooth, and just works, as Macs used to be, in the past. Just as in music, "Less is more". Save all the added stuff for beta versions, or for geeks who just want more & more. Most of us just want the computer to be useful, and work.

As for the bug, Kurt, it's not just CNN, but a bug affecting many websites, Netflix, Amazon Prime, some of the major broadcast networks, which no longer us to see any of their videos, shows, movies, etc, with no possible alternative, aside from using another brrowser. That's beyond a simple, unexpected bug, that's a pretty major pitfall for lots of users, and Apple could've warned us, just as they list which machines are capable of upgrading each new OS.

In any event, it almost, almost, tempts me to just say f - it, and spend a lot less money on a pc... but I just can't do that.

Yes, it works with every other browser! That's not the point, my question is concerning Safari, and that I wouldn't have upgraded to 12, had I known it would mean I can't stream. So now that I have, I'm sure it's a royal pain attempting to downgrade it to 11. I'm so tired of Apple making things not work, simply because they make computers that last longer than a few years, so we are penalized for using them when they reach "vintage" age, which is what, all of four years?

So little? Is it really that much to ask that the browser specifically created by the same company as my machine, won't work for the thousands (100,000s) of users using Macs pre-2012? And it's not just CNN, but videos on Amazaon Prime & Netflix. And I often like to be doing one thing while playing a show or movie, and doing that, by having to open a second browser, is not just a hassle, but will often slow my computer way down, as browsers love to gobble up RAM. What I should do is find a browser that works, and only use it for videos, as of now, every browser has a number of windows that will open along with it, which is what drags down the RAM.

But what really rankles me, is simply the fact Apple said to update to 12, and it said for all users of Sierra. It should have said users of Sierra with 2012 vintage computers or newer, or else we will no longer be able to view most of what we've been viewing for years. How are we to know an update will give us LESS functionality, instead of MORE? Why can't Apple just include that disclaimer, as it's far, far easier to do that, than have all of us searching here & there for why all these videos and sites no longer work? And then the only fix is some big, complicated procedure, backing up, then reinstalling an entire OS, just to get back to where we were before being advised to update. Apple could have easily prevented hours of stress & confusion, with ONE SIMPLE SENTENCE.... but they didn't, so that's why I'm angry.

Bugs are part of software. Apple is no exception. It simply isn't possible to write such complicated software with hundreds of thousands of lines of code (over a million for the OS), and not have bugs. And they can be extremely difficult to track down. A line of code that was added for a new feature, or to fix something else, can cause an issue within a different framework it uses.

The CNN bug has been in Safari for a while. Unfortunately, it's not a major bug, and minor bugs get passed over for months, even years. Apple is spending WAY too much time shoveling features into the OS as fast as possible without fixing or cleaning up what's already there. Users do NOT need a major OS release every single year.
