Why am I continually being asked to give verification code?

On my iMac, which never leaves its desk or the internet connection it lives on, every time I want to log on to my iCloud account or connect to Apple Discussions I have to get a verification code - the message says that my Apple ID is being used to sign in to a new device, which is nonsense, and asking whether I will allow it.  This message comes up on all my devices (e.g. my iPad) which may be in use by another family member, resulting in disruption of their work.  I thought that once I had done this once, I would never have to do it again - just use my password - but no, it happens every time, even when a session times out and I have to sign back on.

Apple's document "Two-factor authentication for Apple ID" includes this statement "Once signed in, you won’t be asked for a verification code on that device again unless you sign out completely, erase the device, or need to change your password for security reasons. When you sign in on the web, you can choose to trust your browser, so you won’t be asked for a verification code the next time you sign in from that computer."

I click the button which comes up asking whether I trust my browser, to say 'Yes". Shouldn't that stop this incessant asking for verification codes? What might I be doing wrong?

Thanks,

Paul.

Hi, Paul Fryer,

I see that you are having some issues with your Apple ID account and being asked for verification. I'm happy to help.

After reading your post, it sounds like you may have two-step verification enabled on your Apple ID and not two-factor authentication. It's easy to get these two mixed up. Two-factor is the newer, more secure way to manage your Apple ID. Two-step is a little older and one of the features is that whenever you sign in to your account online, you'll be prompted to enter a password and a 4-digit verification code. Does this sound like what you're experiencing (as illustrated here: Two-step verification for Apple ID)?

If so, I would recommend following the steps to set up two-factor authentication right here: Two-factor authentication for Apple ID

I hope that this helps you out.

Best regards.

Hey, Paul Fryer,

Since you're still not able to log in without re-authorization, I would recommend double checking that you're not using private browsing. It's possible that if you have private browsing enabled, two-factor isn't going to remember the login. You can learn more about private browsing here: Browse in private in Safari on Mac.

If you're still not having luck, you may want to reach out to Apple ID support to work with an account specialist. You can see a list of phone numbers around the world right here: Contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security.

Cheers.

Thanks.

No, it's not private browsing.

I did contact Apple Support, and they basically said it's normal behaviour. There are times when I do have to get the 6-digit verification code, and times when I don't, even though my perception is that I need it more often than not. And it's certainly more often than it used to be.

I will start a log of when and where it is or is not needed, and get back to Apple if is still seems unreasonable.

Thanks Starr.C, I appreciate your reply.

I believe that it is two-factor authentication, since it is a 6-digit code I am being asked for, and also when I log into my iCloud account two-factor authentication is shown as being turned on.

When I signed back into these discussions for this reply, I had to do it yet again, and again I was asked if I wanted to trust my browser and again I said 'yes'. And this is the same device and browser I use all the time.

I must have a setting wrong somewhere, but I have no idea what or where it might be. Any thoughts?

Paul.
