HomePod use
Has anybody used Airplay on a Homepod to connect to an Airplay compatible AV receiver(Yamaha). If so, how do you go about doing it?

The HomePod is in and of itself a receiver, not an emitter.
If you need to use an AV receiver, then whatever you are sending to the HomePod needs to be sent from its source to the Av Receiver instead.
If playing music from the Apple Music subscription service directly on the HomePod, you would need to play it on another device such as an iPhone or Mac, and AirPlay it to the Av receiver directly.
