The way I read the "Reset password" article, in conjunction with this article:

Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac - Apple Support

if you originally asked Apple to hold your Recovery-Key:

You use "Reset using Password Assistant (FileVault ON)". The procedure they reference will connect to the internet, look up your three questions, and if you can answer them the same way as before, will supply the recovery-key automatically )(and may not tell you what it was) and unlock your encrypted drive, allow you to log in and immediately change your password.

If you decided to hold your OWN Recovery-key:

Apple expected you to write it down on a piece of paper, and to use the section "Reset using YOUR Recovery key (FileVault ON)" they expect you to find that paper and copy the numbers and letters into the blank provided. You will not find it within your Apple-ID information in either case.
