Go to system preferences- energy saver-

turn display off after - and set it for what you like- 15 minutes, etc.

make sure "prevent computer from sleeping automatically when display is off" is not checked.

(my settings - I use macOS Mojave)

The same network activities that can wake your Mac can also keep your Mac from sleeping.

Any app or other process that's running on your Mac could also be keeping your Mac awake. Check the Energy Saver pane of Activity Monitor to identify apps that need your Mac to be awake. If "Yes" appears in the Preventing Sleep column for an app, your Mac won't automatically sleep while the app is running. Other apps prevent sleep only when doing certain things, such playing music or video, printing, or downloading files.

If you started from macOS Recovery on a Mac notebook, automatic sleep is disabled as long as the Mac is using AC power.

Finally found the cause of my computer waking up after putting it to sleep. The case was referred to Engineering and after viewing a screenshot of everything that was happening when I put it to sleep, it was determined my external hard drive was causing the problem. It was a odd glitch perhaps with the connection because once I unplugged it and then plugged it in again, the problem did not appear again. This just was a fluke because now it sleeps like a baby.

Sorry about that. After two hours with Support and then being referred to a higher level of support and now Engineering, I couldn't begin to detail all they tried. They shared my screen and were pointing their arrow to what they wanted done and

it was pretty foreign to me. I was hoping someone somewhere would have had the same problem and would share how they solved the problem. Support will be getting back to me on Monday with what Engineering's solution is after viewing my Activity Monitor and other info sent to them. I will share with the Community if they are able to solve my problem. But thank you for your input.
