How do I get rid of sidebar tabs on my Mac screen?

All of a sudden today I am getting sidebar tabs on the right side of my Mac screen relating to calendar and messages. Are these related to my iPhone. My iPhone software was just updated yesterday. Is there a setting I need to change to get rid of these annoying notification tabs?

What are "sidebar tabs"? Do you mean notifications, that appear at the top right of your screen?

Go to System Preferences->Notifications, and adjust the behavior you want.

You can turn notifications off for some applications.

For example, in the image below you see that I have "Banners" select for the Messages applications. I could click None and turn them off completely.
