audio over network

I've installed logic pro x on two iMacs & have them networked. One as master & other as slave for recording midi. My master iMac is connected to the interface that supplies the audio connection for the reference monitors but the slave has no connection that i can find to send the midi audio to the main system to hear the midi through the monitor's. Am i making this too hard to do or is this a simple fix? I can't find any online info as to how to have the slaves audio join the master's audio. Any help is appreciated.

On the mac connected to your audio interface you would use NetReceive and on the mac you are transmitting your audio from you run NetSend. NetSend is a Audio FX under AU Generators Apple and NetReceive is a software instrument plugin.

I am running Mojave on both macs - ethernet wired together and it works perfectly. You can play and audio file on Mac 2 which actually plays and can be recorded on Mac 1 as well as on Mac 2 having a Software instrument track and playing midi for which the audio is sent to Mac 1.

Edit - I also tested this on a wireless network - works fine!

So you want to send midi data from the master to the slave and have the slave generate the audio based on the instrument selection on the receiving track to then be routed out an audio interface connected to the slave..... Is that correct ?

If not, be very specific what you want to do so I can give you an accurate answer..... If you are now sending midi data instead of audio over the network the answer is different than the above which is for the transmission of audio from one computer to another

in that case you will need to use the midi network setup found in the audio midi setup application.

on the slave in the bottom left corner select "allow anyone to connect" and in the right - give it a bonjour name.

on the host.... create a session ( this name will be the midi port name to send the output to).

then in the directory box you should see the bonjour name of the other computer - select it.

and press connect.... if all works you will see it in the list of participants.

The host machine will then have a midi port named ( what you defined for the session) in logic select this as the output port in the track inspector... record enable that track now. How play and you should see the midi events arrive on the slave computer...

You keep saying audio but it is midi we are routing - so on the slave keyboard create and external midi track (no I/o plugin) and in the track inspector under port select the network sessions name as the output of the track. Select and record enable that track. Now when you play data will be sent over to the master. Make sure on the master you have a track selected that Has a software instrument on it and I believe it is record enabled as well.

confirm the following...

Slave computer has a midi keyboard or controller connected to it.

Master computer has an audio interface/speakers connect to it.

When you play something on the master you hear it out the speakers connected to it

all above correct.

Now open a new logic project on the slave ( add one external midi track only) assign the output port to the network session.

Open a new logic project on the master - create one software instrument track on it - make it a sax.

Record enable both tracks - now when you play on the midi keyboard connected to the slave to you hear the sax on the master?

okay so here's what i've come to find out. i found netsend but not got around to netrecieve because i realized that i'm sending from the computer that's connected to the interface instead of the other way around. This is because my interface is thunderbolt connected & the slave computer has no thunderbolt connection. I'm setup to where i'm creating an external midi track on the master & sending that to an instrument on the slave but i can't add any AU effects to an external midi track. Am i making any sense here?

Okay now you know where I am. I have completed all this & both computers are synced together & the slave plays the instrument but here’s the issue I’m having. The audio plays out of the slaves speaker & not the reference monitors that the master is connected too.

I should also clarify that the master plays fine through the reference monitors because the interface is connected to the master. The slave is connected to the master except the audio can’t be routed from the slave to the master

Okay let’s see if I can get this said politically correct. I’m convinced I have everything connected & synced between the master & slave computers. I’m sending midi info from the master to the slave. The slave is receiving the midi info. I have a midi instrument on the slave track. This is how apple says to do this & it works, but....the midi instrument is playing audio or music or notes like a piano I’m hearing out of the slaves built in speaker. There’s no setting I can find to connect the slaves audio output to the interface which the reference monitors are connected to. From what you described in your last post sounds like I don’t need a slave computer if I’m going to have the midi instrument in the masters track. I hope I’m clearer now. Sorry for all the confusion.

The Slave computer does not have a midi keyboard connected to it. It is connected via usb & configured in the daw. When I play the midi keyboard, I see the midi info on both master & slave. The track on the master is an external midi track & is sent to the slave via a session port & the track on the slave is a midi instrument track with an instrument assigned to it receiving the midi info from the master external midi track via a session port. The session port I’m referring to is the connection port linking the master & slave together.
