How do I hook up a discrete 4 audio interface with thunderbolt 2 to the new 24" imac that has thunderbolt 4

Apple says the adapter will only work from thunderbolt 3 to 2. I have no idea why but it says it won't work from 4 to 2. That's exactly why I asked the question.

Thanks - That contradicts what I read elsewhere, but that makes the most sense. I think it is probably right.
