working with .odt files on Mac
For many years I have used Open office to compile sermons and book notes. Can I get Pages to read and work with these files or am I stuck?

What Peggy said.
Only Apple's Preview application (read-only) and TextEdit can open (formatting may suffer) the Open Document Text (.odt) formatted files. Pages cannot, unless they are first exported as .docx from LibreOffice.

You're not stuck but Pages is unlikely to open them. Try LibreOffice. Its native format is .odt & is much more universally compatible than any version of Pages. It can also work natively with Microsoft Office files.
