Every time I log in to iCloud or manage AppleID I get a message saying someone is trying to log in from a location across the country.

When you sign in with your Apple ID and password in www.icloud.com or appleid.apple.com an immediate mail will be received in your IMAP account stating the Apple ID was used to sign in with the web browser that date and time will be mentioned , if you are in doubts change the password , the location might be different as ip address is located with approximate locations of your Mac .
