iPod software not installed properly

For the last couple of weeks I've been having problems with my iPod nano showing up in my iTunes. On some occasions, when I open iTunes after turning on my computer and logging in, before iTunes actually comes up I get an error message stating that iPod support has not installed properly and it asks me to hit 'OK' to install it. Afterward it works fine. Today when I opened iTunes and plugged in my iPod I got a message stating that the software for my iPod was not installed correctly, and to repair iPod Support from the Apps & Features page of Windows settings. When I go to Apps & Features and scroll down to iPod Support the "modify" button is greyed out, leaving my only option to uninstall. The last time something similar to this happened I ended up having to reinstall iTunes completely.

Should i uninstall iPod Support and see if iTunes re-installs it the next time I open the program? Should I re-install iTunes to see if that works again? Or is this a sign that my iPod is on its way out and I should replace it?

UPDATE: So, I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes on my computer, and when I plugged in my iPod it gave me a prompt to install the driver software. Once it did that, it synced fine. But my computer only does this with my iPod nano; it has not done this with my iPhone.
