How to connect a USB printer to a USB port on Airport Time Capsule running an Ethernet printer

My network includes an Airport Time Capsule with an Ethernet laser printer connected and running without problems. Now, I wish to connect a extra USB printer (ink) to a USB designated port available on the Capsule. What to do to set it up? The USB printer operates well when connected directly to a USB on my computer.- Thanks.

My system: iMac (27", Mid 2010), High Sierra 10.13.6, 2TB Airport Time Capsule,

Ethernet printer: Brother HL-4570CDW.,

USB printer to be connected: Epson L850

AirPort

Not all printers are supported at the USB port of the Time Capsule or other AirPort routers, and Apple does not provide a list of printers or models that are known to work, so you will simply have to find out for yourself whether or not the printer will work when it is connected to the Time Capsule.

Here's how:

Connect the printer to the USB port on the Time Capsule

Power off and restart the Time Capsule

Restart your Mac

Open System Preferences on your Mac (it is the the "gear" icon on the dock)

Open Printers and Scanners

Click on the small + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list on the left panel

Another window will open and display the name of your printer.....IF....it is recognized

If it is, click to highlight and select the printer

Click Add

Now try to print a test document, when you bring up the printer dialog, you will see that your printer has actually been installed twice......one location is at your Mac and the other is at the Time Capsule. Select the printer that is connected at the Time Capsule location and see if the document will print.

If the document prints, you are all set. However, only printing is supported at the USB port on the Time Capsule, so if your printer is a multipurpose device.....scan, copy, fax, etc will very likely not be available.

Bob,

I have already had tested the system the way you suggested. I found that Epson L850 is on the Apple list but only as a printer. This is why I hoped that there might be a chance for a solution, hence my question.

Unfortunately, L850 is a multipurpose device and is not recognised on the "+ list" you mentioned.

So it looks that I should be satisfied with a good, nice, old USB cable :-) - What is not too bad, after all.

Many thanks for your full explanation and diagnosis. The problem might be of interest to other users.

Please accept my best wishes for Christmas and the New Year,

Kris

Bob,

... and your are right !

It was my fault. I regretfully omitted to reset the Time Capsule - what was rather important for the setup.

Everything happened as you suggested. The L850 did appear on the +list, and eventually I had two Epson L850 printers shown in the "Printers and Scanners". The second one is via the Time Capsule. It makes sense.

The list of Apple drivers for printers and scanners, I mentioned, is here: Sterowniki do drukarek i skanerów na komputerze Mac - Wsparcie Apple. - Epson L850 is listed as v. 9.80 and a driver for printer only (D for „drukarka”/printer).

By the way, L850 is a modestly advanced photographic 6 colour ink printer, currently on a tempting pre-Xmas sale here in Europe.

A very happy end – everything works smoothly. There is a lesson for me not to rush installations.

With warm thanks and wishes

Kris

If printing were supported, it would appear on the + list.....even if the other services were not.

Not sure which Apple list that you are referring to. There is one major list that Apple provides, but this only applies to printers that are connected to a Mac......not to a router. If you are saying that Apple provides a list of printers that are supported when they are connected to an AirPort router.......please provide a link for that document.

For example, I have an HP multipurpose device. If I connect it to the USB port on the Time Capsule, it does appear in the + list, and I can set it up to print. But, the other services......fax, copy, scan, etc......are not supported.
