The 1st Generation Apple Pencil can only be used with the 1st/2nd Generation iPad Pro (including the 10.5”) and the 2018 9.7” iPad.

Other iPad models, such as your A1822 (2017 5th Gen iPad) do not have the necessary screen hardware to be compatible with the Apple Pencil.
