Sharing more photos on AppleTV

We recently upgraded to the 4K AppleTV. One of the things we loved doing was looking at all of our pictures while listening to music. The older versions of AppleTV would randomly select pictures from our collection of about 50,000 photographs. Now we are limited to our last 1,000 and it’s getting kind of boring seeing the same ones all the time.

is there anything we can do about this short of “downgrading” our AppleTV? As annoying as it would be paying for something we used to get for free, does iCloud even support this? I don’t want to spend days uploading my pictures for nothing.

Please let me know if anyone has suggestions! Thank you in advance!

Then you are mistaken. As I said, the 2nd gen works the same way as the 4k in that regard. When setting up the screensaver you pick a source and a select batch are cached. Then they are available on the system at any time, and are no longer connected to that source, and you would have to go to the settings to cache a new batch.

If it was actually using home sharing for the screensaver then your computer would need to be on and running iTunes each time you wanted to run the screensaver.

The 1st gen was the only one able to do it because it had an accessible hard drive and the photos resided on the system.

Again, if you want to see your full library you need to actually use home sharing (via the computers app) or put it into iCloud and use the Photos app. Using the slideshow isn't that different from using a screensaver in practice, apart from having to start it manually. You would still be able to set it to random and have it up while listening to music.

Not a problem.

Unfortunately, you will run into the same thing with iCloud. As I had said previously it is cached no matter what the source. So That is why I suggested uploading them to iCloud, which gives you access to them in the photos app, and then using the slideshow function. Again, it is not that different. You just need to start it manually but you can still have it set to random and it have it going while your music is playing.

Well I’m not sure what to tell you because I’ve had every version and the only one that allowed that was the 1st gen. Perhaps that was the model you had. If it really was a 2nd Gen and was showing different ones each time then you would have had to set it up to cache a new batch each time. It literally wouldn’t be possible to do it any other way.

Thank you for your reply. I am aware about most of this. I am using home sharing now with my 4K AppleTV, but it’s still only using the last 1,000 photos I added to my collection. Am I doing something wrong, or is that the limit of Home Sharing? If it is the limit of Home Sharing, will I be similarly constrained if I use iCloud as my source, rather than my desktop Mac, that has a 2 TB hard drive. I was able to stream all of my photos from that to my 2nd Gen AppleTV. Since I upgraded to 4K, I can only get the last 1000.

Maybe I’m not using the right terminology or something. I know that 1G was the only one with local storage. I want all 50,000 of my pictures stored on my Mac to show up as the screens ace on AppleTV. Since upgrading to 4K, I only get the last 1000. With my 2G, I saw all of them. It’s clear I can’t stream from my Mac to AppleTV. If I pay the money for iCloud, will I be able to see all my pictures again on the screensaver (not a slideshow) while listening to music? I want them to come up randomly, as it used to work.

Hope that makes sense. Thank you for your help.

PS Apple I get it, but it’s always disappointing to lose functionality in the name of an upgrade.

I'm 100% certain that we had more than 1000 pictures show up, or at least it was a different 1000 pictures every time.

Is it possible that we had this set up in a different way that permitted this to happen? And now that we set up the new AppleTV, we no longer had that setup?

Sorry if I'm being repetitive here, but my wife and I both clearly remember a lot more photos showing up that what we have now.

I believe you, but I know that I had the 2nd gen. I had the 1st gen and I remember uploading all my pictures to it, and being relieved not to do it with the new one since it streamed directly. I guess it's academic at this point anyway since I don't have a 1G or 2G.

But could I solve my problem going forward by uploading all of my photos to iCloud and then using that as the source of my photos for the AppleTV screensaver? Or do I still end up with the same cache problem with only 1000 photos available?

Thank you for your help with this.

The 1st gen was the only model that allowed content to be synced and stored. From the 2nd Gen onwards it has been streaming only, with a small portion temporarily cached for the screensaver.

You can use iCloud Photo Library to Store your full collection, up to 2TB and then use the slideshow function via the photos app on Apple TV. If you don’t want to store in the cloud you can use home sharing.

If you are using the photos for a screensaver it doesn’t matter what the source is, only a select group will be cached. The same was true for the 2nd Gen

You would need to go into the computers app and select your photo library to view manually, and then start a slideshow. You computer would need to be on and running iTunes each time you want to view your photos.

If you want to bypass home sharing you would need to enable iCloud Photo Library and store your collection there. Then you can access on the photos app, and start the slideshow from there
