Can't update GarageBand because it's tied to old nonexistent email address!

W.T.F.? I get a notice from the App Store to update GarageBand. I attempt to update it but I am denied. Why? Notice says that GarageBand is not associated with my current AppleID but an another AppleID that is no longer valid nor does it exist. I have and use GarageBand on my current and only MacBookPro so W.T.F.? How do I update GarageBand?

MacBook Pro Retina (2015 and later)

Do you have any additional older versions of GarageBand somewhere on your Mac or on a connected external drive or backup drive? These older versions may be prompting an upgrade notice. Is the update notification for GarageBand 6.0.5 or GarageBand 10.3.2?

There has a new GarageBand version been released, GarageBand 10.3.2. This version is compatible with your System. To avoid the confusion with an old AppleID you could simply move GarageBand 10.3.1 to the Trash (but do not empty the Trash, just in case something goes wrong).

Then restart the App Store and Purchase GarageBand again, after you sign in with your current AppleID. GarageBand 10 is free now on High Sierra, so can simply get it assigned to your current AppleID by purchasing it with your new AppleID.

Hello TheeMZ!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I see from your post that when you try to update GarageBand, you receive a message that states that the app is associated with a different Apple ID or one that is not valid.

When you receive this message, this means that GarageBand was downloaded using a different Apple ID e-mail address than what you're currently signed on with. You will need to sign out of that Apple ID and use the one that was used to download GarageBand.

Which version of GarageBand do you have installed, and which system version are you running?

You may be seeing such an error message also, if you have a very old GarageBand '11 version installed, that has been purchased on installer DVDs or came preinstalled on your system and is not tied to your AppleID, because it has not been purchased from the App Store. Could that be the case? Look for old GarageBand versions on connected backup drives.

Thanks for responding to to my issue so quickly. I cannot follow your guidance, unfortunately. Here's why: when I go to update GarageBand, the window to input my AppleID appears. However, my old, old, old email address (Which No Longer Exists) is already filled in but it is greyed out. It will only let me put in the password. I don't know what the password to that old email address because it's so old (10+ years). The other issue is that I never bought GarageBand. Not in the past nor in the present. GarageBand came with my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15 inch mid 2015). The version of GarageBand I have is 10.3.1 and I am running OS X High Sierra 10.13.6 So, here I am, utterly confused. Any and all guidance is greatly appreciated.
