macOS Allows sending direct sound to a single home pod, but when they are paired they are still displayed individually as output devices.
iTunes and specific apps can select the pair as output devices. See below iTunes snapshot:
Whereas macOS cannot see the same pair:

Wish there was a better way to report these, though. The feedback just disappears into the ether.

Again, they don't go into the ether but if you do a search here you will see that this has been reported on more than one occasion so you will not be alone in sending your feedback. For this one I hope you sent it to MacOS feedback, not HomePod.
