Unable to activate, An update is required to activate your iphone

I have an iPhone 7 (model A1778). Bought in May 2017.

I was trying to update the iOS. Upon finishing with the update I got the following message: "Unable to activate, An update is required to activate your iphone". On iTunes I got the message "The iPhone could not be updated because the activation information could not be obtained from the device". I tried to restore the device, and was still getting the same error message. I then went to an Apple Store and they told me that this was a quite "unique" issue. They were unable to fix it as "it did not appear to be a software issue", and my iPhone is unfortunately past the warranty period by 7 months. What's next? Shall I throw it in the rubbish bin?
