FireWire bus error

FireWire devices which work fine on most Macs, do not mount on a G5.

Applejack reports this error:

Firewire (OHCI) Apple ID 52PCI: no valid self ID's for more than 3 mins after bus reset

I have reset PRAM and NVRAM. Also a SMC reset by leaving the G5 power unplugged and holding power-on for 5 secs.

Does this indicate a hardware or software problem?

This is not a rare problem, because it has been asked many times before but I have not seen any explanation or solution.

May we ask more information of you? We have a contradiction that needs to be cleared up before someone posts improper advice.

Your post says "G5" but your equipment line says "Mac Pro." They are very different inside. A SMC reset is something one does on an Intel Mac like the Mac Pro, not a G5. Although the cases are similar, the Mac Pro has two optical drive doors whereas the G5 has but one:

When you post back please also include the Mac OS version you are running. That may help us with what troubleshooting steps to recommend.

Thanks!
