2018 Mac Mini - monitor problems

I have a new 2018 Mac Mini (running OS 10.14.2) which is connected to a LG 24UD58 monitor via a USB3 to DisplayPort cable.

When I shut down the Mac and then try to start it up again, the monitor is blank and does not appear to be receiving a signal from the Mac. I had the same problem when using another monitor (my old Dell U2312HM) using the DisplayPort cable.

When I connect both monitors (the LG via Display Port; the Dell via an HDMI), I am able to shut the Mac down and then start it up again, with both monitors working.

There are other users with similar problems.

Is there any fix?

many thanks

The Mojave 10.14.6 update appears to have resolved the issue for me. Before the update, I sometimes (but not always) had to press the power button on the Mac Mini (i7 16G 1TB) a couple of times (one press for 1 second & release, then a quick second press & release) before the Mac would recognize the monitor (an LG 34" HDMI connected). After the 10.14.6 update I haven't had to go through that rigamarole again. The Mac is recognizing it every time now as it should.

Same issue here.....

The machine boots normally, but the screen is always blank....not even Apple logo.

I have to unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in to the Mac Mini for the screen to appear.

As long as I don't shutdown the Mac, I'm able to restart and wake up from sleep no problems.

As soon as I shutdown and try to boot from cold, the display is black.

Very annoying.

I installed Catalina and now I’m back to square one. Mojave 10.14.6 fixed my problem with no video on startup, at least on HDMI. still broken on USB-C to DisplayPort, but at least it was working with HDMI. I loaded Catalina and now I’m back to blindly typing my password on boot. Also, any pre-boot menus are a problem such as trying to get into recovery mode and the menu to boot from another drive.

Why couldn’t they just incorporate the 10.14.6 fixes into Catalina? They broke it all over again.

I guess I have to make ANOTHER support call tonight!

This is limited to 4K. I can drag out a dusty old square HP 1080p monitor and it works fine.

I was on the phone with a senior advisor today. I have a case going back months for this. 10.14.6 fixed mine for HDMI, but not USB-C to DisplayPort. I was happy with that because at least it was working. Catalina broke it. Now it's even worse. HDMI is totally shot. DisplayPort works once it's booted. Now I have a new problem where sometimes the monitor won't see a signal when I wake the Mac. I know the machine is awake because my USB hub light comes on.

Advisor screen shared my iPhone while I videoed it not working. He sent some notes to the engineers and he's supposed to call me Wednesday.

Royal PITA. Seems like they're dragging this out until the warranty expires in January. I'm not paying for Apple Care just so they can keep stalling.

So it turns out they are taking notice. I’ve always heard Apple monitors the forums but I’ve taken it with a grain of salt.

I got a call this afternoon from an advisor who said he was calling about my posts to this forum and following up to make sure it was being addressed. I wasn’t at home when he called so he said he’ll call back to get logs from my Mini and his follow-up work will happen in parallel to the senior advisor already assigned to my case.

They are watching our posts. If you haven’t already, you may get a call.

I think that Apple knows that the problem is hardware. I bet its T2 chip and HDPC not going well together with some monitor combinations. So it can't be fixed by Catalina or any other software update. They decided that the number of users affected is not that high, so they'll do nothing. But what could they do? Only thing Apple could do is to take your Minis back and return the money to you. This never happens.

Is it a 2014? That one can drive one 4K display at 30hz. Are you sure it’s not displaying 4K? What is your monitor reporting?

It’s likely a 4k signal and your desktop is scaled to 1920x1080. If you tried to use your computer at true 4K the icons and text would be so small it would be unusable.

If you go to Settings>Displays it’s probably set to Default for display. Change it to Scaled and you can choose one of the options to give you more screen real estate.

when you display 4K video it will play at the correct resolution.

I got my Mac Mini during the weekend and I have the same issue. The ironic thing is that I traded my experimental computer for this due to reliability. This is the first time I have an issue like this with an Apple.

I have a HP Pavilion 32q monitor (2560x1440) and sometimes it wakes up, sometimes it doesn't. At first I thought it was the USB3 external hard drive that I was using but it is now doing the same thing even when the drive is not plugged in. Some times the screen is purple but that is fixed by turning it on and off. I don't have FileVault turned on, and I'm considering exchanging my Mini but, based on the posts in this thread, it seems to be an issue with the power for the current model.

Took the leap and upgraded to Catalina (10.15.1) today on this Mac Mini (model 8,1 with 3.2GHz 6-core i7, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, using an LG HDR WFHD 34" monitor connected HDMI to HDMI by the cable that came with the monitor running at 60 Hz) and all is still working as it should.

Will take time now to experiment with some older monitors in single and multi-monitor configurations and post results.

I have the same issue. I have mac mini 2018 base i3 version.

On start monitor say "Out of range" and not work BUT when unplug and plug monitor work normally until next shutdown.

My monitor is old LG Flatron E2342 I use it with cable HDMI to DVI-D. I think the problem is in cable conversion, because on my tv with native hdmi work normally.

I update OS version to 10.15 Catalina. Remove all encryptions and secure boot, reset pram and... I hope to be fixed soon because on this products to plug and unplug monitor on every start up is super lame...

Nope. Update didn't work. It actually made it a bit worse as usually I can plug in a 1080p monitor from cold boot to get to my boot login and it didn't work right away. Once that was stable I tried a OS reinstall and that didn't work either. Apple has to face the fact that there is a hardware flaw and should start a recall.
