2018 Mac Mini - monitor problems

I have a new 2018 Mac Mini (running OS 10.14.2) which is connected to a LG 24UD58 monitor via a USB3 to DisplayPort cable.

When I shut down the Mac and then try to start it up again, the monitor is blank and does not appear to be receiving a signal from the Mac. I had the same problem when using another monitor (my old Dell U2312HM) using the DisplayPort cable.

When I connect both monitors (the LG via Display Port; the Dell via an HDMI), I am able to shut the Mac down and then start it up again, with both monitors working.

There are other users with similar problems.

Is there any fix?

many thanks

The Mojave 10.14.6 update appears to have resolved the issue for me. Before the update, I sometimes (but not always) had to press the power button on the Mac Mini (i7 16G 1TB) a couple of times (one press for 1 second & release, then a quick second press & release) before the Mac would recognize the monitor (an LG 34" HDMI connected). After the 10.14.6 update I haven't had to go through that rigamarole again. The Mac is recognizing it every time now as it should.

You can avoid most of the thermal issues by installing the utility "Turbo Boost Switcher for OSX" and disabling turbo boost. My 2018 i7 Mac mini now runs nearly 30C cooler (60C vs 87C peaking at 100C) when only using 17% of the CPU cores as per the Intel Power utility. So, yes, the 2018 Mac mini has thermal issues too. Overall, it's been a rather disappointing experience compared to the Mac minis from previous years. My next machine will be an Intel NUC running FreeBSD.

Found out today from my senior advisor that enfineering has not figured it out yet. I was told that months ago so nothing new. They told me my options were send it back to Apple for repair (don’t know what they’d repair) or go to the Apple Store. Since I can’t be without my machine I’m off to the Apple Store tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted.

Having this same issue of the screen not turning on. I'm connecting via HDMI. I need to unplug and replug the HDMI cable from the mini everytime to get the screen to turn on.

My mini was fine till Mojave 10.14.5. I did the supplemental update and then the problem started. Did the revised (b) supplemental update a couple of days ago as well hoping that would fix things, no dice ! Now folks are posting here that even Catalina does not fix this issue. Horrible !

Is there a way for me to go back to 10.14.5 ? Maybe downgrading the OS might help ?

Thanks

Yes. My store no longer has a Genius Bar so they had to clear off one of the tables. I hooked up my monitor and show them how I have to blind type my password and it eventually works. This also means I have no access to the boot menu, which I showed them.

He disappeared and came back with an ancient VGA monitor with an HDMI adapter and of course it worked.

I told him it’s a 4K problem. He told me since it feeds a signal it’s not hardware.

I was furious. The store is a 2-hour round trip so I wasted half a day.

Excellent ! Keep us posted.

The advisor in touch with me is gonna help me format and re-install Mojave 10.14.6 on Monday. Unfortunately it seems it's not possible to go back to 10.14.5 (which was working fine for me) and I won't install Catalina (as my work softwares are not yet compatible with it). From the experience of all the posters here, it seems unlikely it's gonna solve anything, but lets see.

Will keep this thread updated.

So Mojave 10.14.6 has been re-installed after a clean format. Still no luck with the display :(

Odd that even during the installation process, when the computer boots as part of the installation, even then the monitor does not come on. So I have to take the HDMI cable out and plug it back in even during a fresh installation !

My advisor has asked me to take the Mac-Mini to the service center now and that they would run diagnostics.

Will update this thread with what the service center have to say about it.

It would seem to make sense to login a complaint, but as Apple has been dealing with this for a year now and the fact that there are thousands of posts to be seen means they are well aware of it. Yet to this day when you call in they act like it is the first time they are hearing about it and you are the only one with that problem. Their policy is to never admit to a problem and never let you know. And if they knew how to solve it, I think they would have let us know by now. At the very least put out an update to fix problem, then deny there ever was a problem. Because it has been a year and we are on to a new OS as well with boat loads of people still having trouble, means they know nothing. And we are on our own until that changes. The very point that a year into this they are still telling people who don't know to just try and reinstall OS is a joke. They know it won't work up front but they have to tell you something no matter that they are wasting a persons time . As of MON OCT 14 2019 I think they are clueless as to what to say or what to do. We can only hope now that they figure this out soon for those who still have trouble.
