2018 Mac Mini - monitor problems

I have a new 2018 Mac Mini (running OS 10.14.2) which is connected to a LG 24UD58 monitor via a USB3 to DisplayPort cable.

When I shut down the Mac and then try to start it up again, the monitor is blank and does not appear to be receiving a signal from the Mac. I had the same problem when using another monitor (my old Dell U2312HM) using the DisplayPort cable.

When I connect both monitors (the LG via Display Port; the Dell via an HDMI), I am able to shut the Mac down and then start it up again, with both monitors working.

There are other users with similar problems.

Is there any fix?

many thanks

The Mojave 10.14.6 update appears to have resolved the issue for me. Before the update, I sometimes (but not always) had to press the power button on the Mac Mini (i7 16G 1TB) a couple of times (one press for 1 second & release, then a quick second press & release) before the Mac would recognize the monitor (an LG 34" HDMI connected). After the 10.14.6 update I haven't had to go through that rigamarole again. The Mac is recognizing it every time now as it should.

10.14.5 didn't fixed the problem. Still have problem connecting the Thunderbolt display using the USB-C port, mac freezes, kernel panic, shut down and only restarts correctly if the display is unplugged.

Any idea if it's possible to connect the Thunderbold Display (Thunderbolt 2) to the HDMI port in mac mini? I tried some connectors and adapters, but all of them are Thunderbolt 2 (source) > HDMI and not HDMI (source) > Thunderbolt 2

I'm using the LG HDMI cable that came with the monitor. I tried getting a new LG HDMI cable and same issue. I have an ancient AppleTV so I can't test using that. Any other ideas? The cable is rated as capable of driving the display, and it does work just fine once it's up.

My guess is that your problem was the cable but that's not the problem of many people here! But I might look for a newer cable anyway..,.

I have the same problem relating to this monitor problem.

I bought this Macmini 2018 in Last November, and used without any problems until March or April this year.

The problem is that the monitor becomes black after startup (70 - 80 % progress) and this occurs 30 -40 % probability at power on startup or restart.

This problem become to occur frequently after around March or April (not sure about the time).

In this case, the system itself started up normally, and I confirmed it by re-connecting HDMI cable or seeing through remote desktop!

Is there any way to supress or escape from this problem?

Need to amend my post from yesterday...put the mini to sleep with both monitors powered on last night, and when I tried to wake the HP monitor went to sleep immediately. This sent me into the spiral of the mini going into restart. Was able to recover quickly but got the system report "error 201". So after playing around It now seems like I cannot wake both monitors, but any one at a time. And I can only restart or reboot through the HP monitor.

Thank you CG2019. I am having the same kind of problems with my 2018 Mac mini. I thought maybe my HDMI cable was bad so I ordered a new one. I have also had problems with an OWC external drive bay attached with a USB A - B connector. Hopefully Mojave 10.14.6 will resolve my issues as well. This is a work computer so I am just going to have to tolerate these problems until the public release of Mojave comes out or Catalina if it come out sooner.

I hope that continues to work for you BranoB.

Just an FYI I have had great luck with Cable Matters cables, especially Ethernet cables. You get them on Amazon, they are fairly/low priced and come with a lifetime guarantee. The Ethernet cables have metal jacketed connector which stands up to a lot of plugging and unplugging.

I ordered new Cable Matter HDMI cables which I am pretty sure will be better than the cheap ones that came with my older ViewSonic monitor. I would prefer to use the HDMI port as I have a number of peripherals that will I would like to leave plugged into the four USB-C ports.

Desronto and Ravenx619, thank you for the encouraging reports and link to the Beta program. Since this 2018 Mac mini is used for business I am concerned about using the Catalina beta but being a very much a geek when I was younger I will probably end up downloading and installing the Beta after creating a Carbon Copy Clone of my Mojave install as there are two programs I need on occasion that are 32 bit. I feel really bad for those who returned their Mac minis thinking that they were experiencing hardware issues but can understand why they did it.
