2018 Mac Mini - monitor problems

I have a new 2018 Mac Mini (running OS 10.14.2) which is connected to a LG 24UD58 monitor via a USB3 to DisplayPort cable.

When I shut down the Mac and then try to start it up again, the monitor is blank and does not appear to be receiving a signal from the Mac. I had the same problem when using another monitor (my old Dell U2312HM) using the DisplayPort cable.

When I connect both monitors (the LG via Display Port; the Dell via an HDMI), I am able to shut the Mac down and then start it up again, with both monitors working.

There are other users with similar problems.

Is there any fix?

many thanks

Apple reliability has been very consistent for me ver the years:

the 24° 2007 iMac had two gpu replaced in the course of his life (not under warranty),

the 17° 2011 Mac book pro had two motherboards replaced as well (under warranty) and it's now on his third.

The 2014 retina MBP has a CPU problem apparently so that it shouts down randomly if I don't disable the thunderbolt drivers, it would cost 500€ to fix, (thanks Apple).

And now this, piece of crap Mac mini, it's really time to escape the "ecosystem" my bad for not doing it sooner.

So that being said and discussing the topic for a few months now, how long will it take Apple to fix this. I called the helpdesk several times and was upscaled to senior helpdesk support, but although always very kind and trying to help, it always ends with "I am sorry, I am not able to help you with this problem: ...The very short time out on my LG to go into sleep mode makes the problem even worse.

Shouldn't there be an update for the Mac Mini firmware?

Apple must be reading these messages too?

I'm having issues also - I have 2 new LG 4K screens and 1 old crap Dell that I rotate and use for long lists (for example) that don't change much.

NONE of the 3 displays worked. It seemed that nothing I did would change anything and I was pulling my hair out! And no, it's not FileVault; there are too many inconsistencies in the reports, and there are too many having trouble who don't use FileVault at all. But guys - the answer is not to immediately throw tomatoes at Apple, say that they suck, it's all their fault, that quality control is down, take it back to the store, yell at people on the phone, etc. Please, put your torches and pitchforks away for a moment.

I needed to have some patience. Like some of you I stripped it down and started with one display at a time, with just the Mini (I had also bought the BlackMagic eGPU). What you need to do next is not to add a second, and then the third; it's to do one display again - a different one. Use the same cables you used for the first display, if you got that one working. Then the third one by itself. Doing this I discovered that each of my screens worked just fine with my new Mini. And I also learned that those particular cables were good. Now I was feeling a bit relieved, because I was beginning to think that I had made a mistake in buying everything that I did.

Looking at Apple's instructions, it seems that the best way to attach my particular displays is via DisplayPort for the 4K screens, and HDMI for the crappy Dell. And so I connected the Dell - with a DVI to HDMI adapter - to the Mini and got...nothing. No worries - no need to reboot, reinstall, zap the VRAM, etc. I just messed with the cable and the adapter a bit and lo and behold, a picture appeared! It would seem that I might have a bad cable. Now I'd add in more - the eGPU, with a thunderbolt cable. Tried to use the HDMI port there instead of the Mini. Also tried the second display by DisplayPort to thunderbolt on there. No joy. Sure, I was frustrated...but not yet time to develop a hate-on for Apple. I looked around and found the thunderbolt cable that came with the GPU (I was using another cable instead because it was longer). Replaced the cable - and both screens now worked.

I still haven't got the third display up and running...but I'm sure I will. I don't have a signal, but I have power to it now - because it needed to be moved from one outlet to another in the UPS (sheesh!). And I'm not saying that there isn't an issue - I believe there is something strange going on. But I also believe too many were too quick to jump on the "They Suck! Kill Apple!" bandwagon. Spend a little time with your Mini, guys - make sure there aren't any bad cables, adapters, outlets, or configurations. Maybe some patient troubleshooting will help a few of you? I hope so. Good luck with everything.

This problem has been going on for six months now, without an official response nor a solution form apple. What makes you think that swapping the cables around some will solve it? And also what makes you believe that we did not try this sort of basic troubleshooting?

Quality control at Apple has been down for the last 15 years, no surprise there, I think we have all the good reasons to be upset at this point.

Gmac34 and Davert - I don't mean to imply that it's something simple and that nobody tried jiggling a cable. :) There are all kinds of users on here, and many who may not be as tech-savvy as you and I are. For some, it IS a simple case of changing the cable, etc.

I don't think there has been an "official response" from Apple because there isn't an official problem. At least, not a reproducible one. I sought out answers, like you, when I couldn't get ANYTHING to work properly. Now I've got all three of my screens working (1 old HD Dell rotated 90° and 2 new LG 27" 4Ks), as well as a USB 8-bay RAID, two 4-bay RAIDs (one thunderbolt, one USB), two 8TB drives, an old JBL "Creature" sound system (anyone remember those?), and a USB 3.0 hub with a plethora of devices attached including a 3.0 dual-drive dock, an old mic, my UPS, my mouse's charging pad, and my keyboard. Not a hiccup from anything...but it took a lot of frustrating cable-swapping and even outlet-swapping on my UPS.

Perhaps this Mac Mini is significantly more sensitive to sub-par cables, etc. The short cable that came with the BlackMagic eGPU made the biggest difference for me. The cord I had been trying worked just fine for everything else - but not with the eGPU.

I have to disagree that Apple's Quality Control is down; don't forget that Apple used to make EVERYTHING. Each part of the computer was proprietary, from the displays to the graphics cards...even the RAM was Mac-specific. Apple knew everything would work, and quality control was easy with the "made for Mac" peripherals on the market. It's why Windows was a mess and Apple "just worked". But people will always complain, no matter what you give them; at that time they wanted Apple to do away with the proprietary hardware and use standardized parts. We have that now - I can put any drive I want in my Macs, any RAM, GFX cards, etc. And with that freedom to choose comes infinite possible configurations - a quality control nightmare, and unhappy users who want it to "just work" like it used to all those years ago. ;)

I have great cables. And one monitor. Sporadic problems like the chip is wonky. Shouldn't matter if I plug it directly into the HDMI port or plug the cable into the HDMI port on the USB C hub. It works reliably on the hub. The HDMI port on the Mac mini isn't reliable. Not something on every computer so not easy for Apple to track. May never find the cause.
