2018 Mac Mini - monitor problems

I have a new 2018 Mac Mini (running OS 10.14.2) which is connected to a LG 24UD58 monitor via a USB3 to DisplayPort cable.

When I shut down the Mac and then try to start it up again, the monitor is blank and does not appear to be receiving a signal from the Mac. I had the same problem when using another monitor (my old Dell U2312HM) using the DisplayPort cable.

When I connect both monitors (the LG via Display Port; the Dell via an HDMI), I am able to shut the Mac down and then start it up again, with both monitors working.

There are other users with similar problems.

Is there any fix?

many thanks

The Mojave 10.14.6 update appears to have resolved the issue for me. Before the update, I sometimes (but not always) had to press the power button on the Mac Mini (i7 16G 1TB) a couple of times (one press for 1 second & release, then a quick second press & release) before the Mac would recognize the monitor (an LG 34" HDMI connected). After the 10.14.6 update I haven't had to go through that rigamarole again. The Mac is recognizing it every time now as it should.

They told me to do the same thing and it’s an hour process... Deleting the 2 windowserver.plist files allowed me to restore display (but I would still lose it after any change) in 2 mins.

It’s disappointing that connecting the 4K screen to the USB C port didn’t help in your case. The brand might be a factor, in any case it’s a clear bug...

I think you can try deleting the 2 plists but in theory if the issue was resolved they would update properly... you can still try and reboot but make sure you can restore them just in case.

In my case it was weird, both deleting them and restoring them would restore the display, and they didn’t update. They regenerating correctly once I switch to USB C.

I have the same issue.

LG 24UD58 via USB-C -> DisplayPort doesn't work.

LG 24UD58 via HDMI works well.

I've connected LG 24UD58 to mac mini via DisplayPort and HDMI at same time and it works both DP and HDMI!

When i use (switch monitor settings) DP input - macos see only one monitor.

When i use HDMI input - macos see two monitors.

If i connect mac mini's HDMI to another monitor (1080p) - LG 24UD58 via DisplayPort doesn't work.

I think problem is LG 24UD58. I'm going to test if this monitor work's with mac mini via DisplayPort if connected via HDMI to another source (and not to use mac mini's hdmi).

I fully agree, the problem is not the monitor, it is brand independent and same monitors don't have any issues with another computer, only with the Mac mini. So the problem is the Mac mini 2018 and the only way to fix this, is by Apple releasing a firmware update. It is unacceptable with so many reports about these errors and not only in this forum that Apple is not updating or fixing this!

I have Thunderbolt Display 2 and I bought my mac mini 2018 on February. Since the update 10.14.4, when i connect the display port on one of the the Thunderbolt 3 ports (with adapter) the Mac-mini just restarts. I tried the same monitor on my macbook pro late 2011 and it's working normally. If i turn on the Mac-min without the monitor plugged in and access it with my iPad using any remote access like Team Viewer, it works normally. when i try to plug the TBD on the USB-C port again, the Mac-mini freezes and restarts.

Tried to reset the SMC, no success. Tried other monitor in the HDMI port and it worked normally. It was working with the TBD2 normally before the update. I'm with the 10.14.4 update running and I'll will try to downgrade to 10.14.1 to see this solves the problem.

I was on the phone with one of their senior support. I was able to get the crash logs using the log app with the command "log show --predicate 'eventMessage contains "Previous shutdown cause"' --last 24h" executed in the terminal app. In case any of you are having the mac mini restarting or freezing, this could help identify the code of the failure.

The support instructed me to collected a system diagnosys report via remote connection and send to a private link, so the engineers could analyse all the problems. So far it's not related to the USB-C ports, the thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 connector, the Cinema display, high temperatures, energy, damaged cable, apps and OS. 48 hours to get an answer (probably will arrive on monday (april fools day, for the record)

After sending some system dialogs, the Apple engineers find an issue with Duet App , that makes iPad/iPhone an extra display. After uninstalling the app, made test on the 4 USB-C ports. Each one gives the same error, Kernel Panic error with the codes -20 and -63. I didn't find anything besides that.

After sending them 2 system diagnoses and nothing on why this is happening, they verified that there is an issue with the USB-C ports and external monitors. I have external hard drives using the USB-C ports with no problem and another display connected on the HDMI port working normally.

they advised to go to an Apple authorized repair center. Let's see what they will find something.

"The short cable that came with the BlackMagic eGPU made the biggest difference for me. The cord I had been trying worked just fine for everything else - but not with the eGPU."

The eGPU uses Thunderbolt 3. Short cables can work for both USB and Thunderbolt 3.

For greater distances with Thunderbolt 3 you need special Thunderbolt 3 cables with the lightning bolt icon on the USB-C plugs.

Just opened my new Mac mini; hooked it up to 2 older Dell monitors using USB-C to DVI for both monitors. Booted up fine and both monitors were displaying. The second monitor is no longer being detected after updating the software to the latest version (10.14.4). This leads me to believe this is a SOFTWARE UPDATE issue.

First Mac I have purchased in many years, and this is NOT a welcoming sign.

> Are we sure it's LG?

No.

However, there are multiple 2018 Mac mini display issues being conflated. It does not appear to be one single issue.

o There are the issues with using more than one monitor.

o There are the issues with using FileVault.

o There are the issues with monitors waking from sleep (not just LG, I have two 2018 Mac minis one using a BENQ and the other using a CMV with the won't wake).

o There are possible issues with the type of monitor connection used (USB-C to VGA, USB-C to DVI, HDMI, HDMI to DVI etc).

o There are issues with the cables/adapters being used.

All of these issues only seem to affect the 2018 Mac mini, so far.

I can say that I still do not get video to EITHER monitor (one HDMI direct LG 4K, one DisplayPort-to-DVI, formerly DisplayPort-to-HDMI, formerly just DisplayPort) on startup with FileVault active. Works just fine once the computer is booted, and works over a reboot. Guess: something in firmware or PRAM is not functional. History: in the past I've been able to make it work by going into Recovery (no FileVault, I guess?) and Lost Password mode; and always works over a reboot.

Apple was not helpful.

No sleep-wake issues other than taking too long for the monitor to wake up, but that's something that just requires patience.

Hi,

The HDMI switch I referred to cost me 3,5Euro. I bought it years ago to connect more devices to my TV. When you have connected more devices it is switching automatically based on signal in cable. In Slovakia it is still available. You can try to google it under this tag>

Esperanza EB266 HDMI switch 3xIN, 1xOUT

or

Digitus DS-45302

However I believe that this problems will be solved with next software update as Mr. matsuda0707 tested out. Thank you for that.

I'm using a similar approach to brutus inquisitor to save wear and tear on the USB-C plug/socket for the video connector. The 2018 Mac mini now runs 24x7 unless I'm away for a few days in which case I shut it down.

I suspect it's a firmware issue (most likely the T2 iBridge firmware) that Apple seem incapable of fixing despite several firmware updates, not to mention the two Mojave 10.14.6 "supplemental" updates.

I finally got to install Catalina 10.15. I wanted to start anew, so I booted into Recovery Mode and erased the whole volume. Next I clean-installed Catalina. I installed the OS and Xcode before shutting down the Mac.

When booting up, my LG 27UK850 4K monitor shows the loading screen with the white Apple logo on a purple background instead of black. The message "Out of range" appears. This message comes from the monitor, it's not a macOS message. It looks like some kind of synching issue.

The username and password screen is still purple. Then I log into my account, the screen fades out and the new screen with the Catalina background looks right, no purple color and the error message from the monitor disappears.

For the moment this is better than a blank screen (I hope this "Out of range" issue does not harm the monitor anyway). I understand many people can't clean install, but I wanted to try because with Mojave some versions worked fine, but others didn't.

I hope this helps the engineers debug this issue.
