Mac Mail

I just cannot get Mail running again after it failed ("crashed").

It was all working normally until I was advised to update Safari due to 'Security Issues'. I did that and now the Mail stopped working completely.

I can only Get or Send Mail messages in my ISP (Virgin Media) account, where I can use it like a normal mail service.

I've also tried using System Preference to Delete then add it as a new mail - no luck, I get as far as in this screenshot:

But I keep clicking on the blue 'Next' button and nothing happens!

Please help me to sort this problem out.

Thank you.

Yes...

1. Start up from macOS Recovery

To start up from macOS Recovery, turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold one of the following combinations on your keyboard. Command-R is generally recommended, especially if you never installed macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later.

Command (⌘)-R

Install the latest macOS that was installed on your Mac.

Option-⌘-R

Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.

Shift-Option-⌘-R

Install the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

Release the keys when you see the Apple logo, a spinning globe, or a prompt for a firmware password. When you see the Utilities window, you've started up from macOS Recovery.

By going through the whole process these are what I get:-

If I ignore the previous one and click "Next" I can't get the blue "Done" button to work. I tried UNchecking the items, as suggested by BDAqua but still no luck.

I've tried and these are all I get:-

***

I'm going round and round with no success. I've tried two passwords - 1) that for my ISP account, which is fine, 2) my own password for my email address. As you see, the account remains CLOSED but I can't make it open.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

I've done everything as you suggest in the new account but it's all the same as my original account - none of the new messages appear.

Mail is just the same and I get the same problems if trying to set up a new Mail account.

Still no Mail!

Thanks for the info., but, it's the same as before because, after doing the macOS Recovery, the same thing happens as here (as you see, I tried it with and without a user name same password each time):-

It seem I'll have to carry on using my I.S.P. account for emails and forget all about Apple's Mail. Do you agree?

I'm using IMAP4 PORT 993 and SMTP PORT 465. I presume by Authentication you mean a password?

I still get a failure as here:-

I just can't get it to install, so I'm still having to do emails using my I.S.P. account.

Just yet ANOTHER black mark against Apple!

If Apple's Mail app was not working correctly there would be thousands of posts similar to yours complaining that Mail does not work. This is not the case. I suspect you are doing something with your Mail, network, ISP configuration, etc. that is causing issues. So the "black mark" against Apple as you describe in this case just is not so.
