I purchased an iPhone 8 a year ago. I wanted to charge it so i took the original apple charger and connected the USB to my laptop and the second i connected my phone the screen went black but still seemed on after maybe 5 seconds the whole phone turned off and basically died. Nothing is showing on the screen at all. I tried everything.

No you didn't. You said that you used the charger that came with the phone.
USB is an industry standard so the charger is not a significant worry (excluding the 29-cent versions). However, the cable is Apple proprietary. Were you using an Apple cable?
