How to share contacts in family sharing without another ID

How can we share contacts within Family. It seems easy for calendar; regardless of who updates it, we can all see the current information, but apparently no similar way to share contacts.

I did find a reference to using a 'extra' Apple ID, but that is an over complicated fudge.

I also saw a reference to using the Contacts icon on the Mac; to copy contacts to other family members - but is there no automatic way of doing this, without the individual having to remember to update it on the Mac (rather than their iPhone), and then copy it over the other users to ensure all Contact Lists remain the same?
