Trouble signing in to Apple ID

I am attempting to reset the admin password on my MacBook Pro using the Apple ID recovery. Whenever I input my username and password (which are correct) I get a message that there was a server connection error. I have tried resetting my computer multiple times as well as re entering my password with little luck.
