Apple Mobile Device Service not installed

The Apple Mobile Device Service is not running or installed on my Win 10 laptop after installing iTunes through the Microsoft Store. It was working last week, but I uninstalled and reinstalled to try to fix another problem. Since then AMDS is missing. Apple seems to have no procedure for reinstalling it besides reinstalling iTunes, which doesn't work (tried half a dozen times). I even tried a system restore to prior to the uninstall/reinstall. Still nothing. Please help me figure this out.

You may want to try installing iTunes using the traditional iTunes64Setup.exe installer rather than the version supplied by the Microsoft Store.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

Hello psteichen,

Thanks for the post in Apple Support Communities. I see you're unable to locate Apple Mobile Device Service on your PC.

You mentioned you're not finding the AMDS on your PC; have you checked in the location described here? If you find it here, you may be able to restart the service with the steps in the link: Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows.

For clarification, you mentioned that reinstalling iTunes didn't work; did you run into an error message when you reinstalled iTunes? When you uninstalled and reinstalled, did you follow these exact steps in order? Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later.

If you've completed those steps and the issue persists, I recommend getting in touch with Microsoft for your next steps. Since iTunes was downloaded from the Microsoft Store and the issue persists after you did a system restore, they would be the next best point of contact per the "Reinstall iTunes and related components" section of the link I posted above. Contact Microsoft Support.

I hope this helps!

Kind regards.
