MacBook won't connect to the internet!!!

I recently switch wireless service at home to At&t.

Since, my computer "connects" to my network, accepts my password, and shows full signal, but when I open Safari, or any other app that requires internet, I just get the "failed to open page because you are not connected to the internet" page.

My roommates connect to use our wireless network with their PC's just fine, and my Mac connects to other wireless service at school and work and works just fine.

I have been on the phone with At&t many times trying to troubleshoot and fix the problem. No success.

Apple charged me $49 to talk to them, with no success.

I HAVE ALREADY TRIED RESTARTING both my Mac and my router, I have reset the router, I have restored original settings in both Safari and my router, I have tried removing the security from our network in order to connect without a password, I have tried re-configuring the router to work with Macs....all no success.

I am very frustrated with the situation as I, like most people, require internet access for both school and work.

Any help, tips, or advice on the situation would be grateful.

Thank you.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I just purchased a brand new MacBook Pro today and spent my first four hours with it struggling to connect to wifi. After trying every solution I could find, this one finally worked. The solution I found (https://community.bt.com/t5/Connected-Devices-Other/BT-INFINITY-wifi-loss-on-Mac Book-Air-ready-to-quit/m-p/1160960#M7876…) noted that Macs often run in to trouble connecting to wifi when there are identical names assigned to 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz frequency bands.

To fix this problem: access your wireless gateway (For Xfinity users: go to 10.0.0.1 by typing it into the browser of a connected device, enter username: admin pwd: password <-defaults for all xfinity customers) and modify the SSID for the 2.4ghz frequency (e.g., add an 's' to the end of the network name). Then, restart your computer and voila, you should be able to connect. (I still can't access the original network name—the 5ghz frequency—however, I'm able to access the newly named 2.4ghz variation of the network, and it works perfectly).

Hope this saves someone else the headache!

hey! ive got the solution (one that works for me, but i livenin canadanso it might work differently)

i actually had that problem too but it isnt because of the mac its due to your wifi being weak.

what you'll need to do is

1. open network preferences>advanced

2. go to the second tab TCP/IP

3. in the configure IPv4 bar select 'manually'

(sometimes the mac cant find or access the ip address, subnet mask or router)

4. go to a device thats connected to the wifi youre trying to access and find the ip address, subnet mask, and router (you can find that info if you click into the properties of the network. its easier to find on your iphone though.

5. put in all the information, they should look like this:

ip address: 192.168.2.143

subnet mask:255.255.255.0

router:192.168.2.1

yours will be different numbers though

6. click 'ok' then click 'apply'. wait for a few seconds and see if wifi works, if not all you need to do is click the 'assist me' button and go through these steps:

a) click diagnostics>automatic>continue>wifi>the network youre trying to access>allow>itll ask about the manual ip address, click yes, continue>continue>no>no>quit

and it should have fixed by now

it works for me and my roomate and our house has the worst wifi ever. elsewhere you wouldnt need to go through so much trouble. oh and if you wamt to connect to other wifi outside of home, make sure you change the settings back from manual to 'using DHCP'

hope it helps! sorry for the nad grammar, im currently using a windows tablet to type all of this out and theres no autocorrect or anything

Been dealing with this problem for what SEEMS to be over a month already. Finally figured it out today! I was having an issue connecting to the internet only at work. At my house and everywhere else it was fine. The way we have the internet set up here is first a LAN hub that's then run to another LAN Hub that's then run to ANOTHER LAN hub. I tried connecting directly to the first hub and i got internet, then the 2nd where i also got internet, but that third one was the one that made me almost pull my hair out. I did NOT get internet from that one. I haven't figured out if it's a driver issue or possible just a firm ware update but either way I can bypass that and come strait from the 2nd LAN hub. Hope this helps 🙂

Have the same problem, and this one works for me:

System Preference >> Network >> Wi-Fi (click advanced on the bottom right) >> Proxies

Below you can see there's a box for Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) on the bottom.

User uploaded file

In my case, this box was checked before, and so I unchecked it--and now my connection works as usual! I don't know if this will work for you, but it works for me. Hope this helps.

Thanks!

Your method worked too for me! Thank you, thank you!!!! However -- a note for those on OS 10.6.8 on a Macbook Pro... when you follow Jessiemarieee's instructions, after rebooting the modem and while the computer is turned off, hold down all 4 keys at once (command, control, R, P) as you press the ON button. It will go to the regular blue screen with all the icons and you can let go of the buttons. Click on the wifi icon at the top of the screen, select your network, and once it activates, you should be good to go!!
