MacBook won't connect to the internet!!!

I recently switch wireless service at home to At&t.

Since, my computer "connects" to my network, accepts my password, and shows full signal, but when I open Safari, or any other app that requires internet, I just get the "failed to open page because you are not connected to the internet" page.

My roommates connect to use our wireless network with their PC's just fine, and my Mac connects to other wireless service at school and work and works just fine.

I have been on the phone with At&t many times trying to troubleshoot and fix the problem. No success.

Apple charged me $49 to talk to them, with no success.

I HAVE ALREADY TRIED RESTARTING both my Mac and my router, I have reset the router, I have restored original settings in both Safari and my router, I have tried removing the security from our network in order to connect without a password, I have tried re-configuring the router to work with Macs....all no success.

I am very frustrated with the situation as I, like most people, require internet access for both school and work.

Any help, tips, or advice on the situation would be grateful.

Thank you.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Wow. Same problem. Like often happens when a Mac quirk shows up I just wasted hours of my life and finally got it to work. I'll share the steps I took. First it worked two days ago at the same coffee shop, the only thing that had changed was the password, however no matter how many times I entered the password in the different forms. Nothing. All I got was a not connected... due to the "self assigned IP address" message. I attempted the tricks that people posted here: 1) Turned off and back on the wi fi ... nothing 2) restarted the computer... nothing 3)I went into System Preferences > under TCP/IP I changed the Configure IPv4 to "Using DHCP Manually" and used an IP address close to the one from my other mac which was connected just fine... almost nothing... the green light went on and it said connected under wi fi in the left panel of the preferences... but no actual connection 4) I changed the Manual IP address to Match my working Connected Mac... almost nothing... the green light again went on and it said connected under "wi fi" in the left panel of the preferences... but no actual connection 5) I deleted "Wi Fi" from the left panel and recreated it using the + and - buttons on the bottom of the left pane and hit renew DHCP address, but it recreated the same 162... IP as before and still not working 6) I changed the from a 162... to a 192... nothing 2) I hit Renew DHCP Lease... nothing same IP.

Then...

Here's what finally worked: Again in System Preferences>Network> I turned Wi-Fi off, Went to Advanced>TCP/IP>Configure IPv4 and changed it to off, hit "OK", Highlighted Wi-Fi in the left column, hit the - sign on the bottom left, deleting it, then hit the + and created it. I got a message saying there is no assigned IP address so I went back into >advanced>TCP/IP and turned on Using DHCP, Hit "Renew DHCP Lease" and it finally created a brand new IP address 10..... and if finally F'n worked.

Jeez Apple get it together. This is a ridiculous problem.

I hope my struggles actually help someone

hey! ive got the solution (one that works for me, but i livenin canadanso it might work differently)

i actually had that problem too but it isnt because of the mac its due to your wifi being weak.

what you'll need to do is

1. open network preferences>advanced

2. go to the second tab TCP/IP

3. in the configure IPv4 bar select 'manually'

(sometimes the mac cant find or access the ip address, subnet mask or router)

4. go to a device thats connected to the wifi youre trying to access and find the ip address, subnet mask, and router (you can find that info if you click into the properties of the network. its easier to find on your iphone though.

5. put in all the information, they should look like this:

ip address: 192.168.2.143

subnet mask:255.255.255.0

router:192.168.2.1

yours will be different numbers though

6. click 'ok' then click 'apply'. wait for a few seconds and see if wifi works, if not all you need to do is click the 'assist me' button and go through these steps:

a) click diagnostics>automatic>continue>wifi>the network youre trying to access>allow>itll ask about the manual ip address, click yes, continue>continue>no>no>quit

and it should have fixed by now

it works for me and my roomate and our house has the worst wifi ever. elsewhere you wouldnt need to go through so much trouble. oh and if you wamt to connect to other wifi outside of home, make sure you change the settings back from manual to 'using DHCP'

hope it helps! sorry for the nad grammar, im currently using a windows tablet to type all of this out and theres no autocorrect or anything

Have the same problem, and this one works for me:

System Preference >> Network >> Wi-Fi (click advanced on the bottom right) >> Proxies

Below you can see there's a box for Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) on the bottom.

User uploaded file

In my case, this box was checked before, and so I unchecked it--and now my connection works as usual! I don't know if this will work for you, but it works for me. Hope this helps.

Thanks!

Hi I've been having this problem for weeks and its particularly frustrating because you can see that the wireless is picking up a signal but failing at the network settings stage.

THIS WORKED FOR ME

Go to system preferences
On the top row click on security
Click on firewall
Highlight - Allow all incoming connections

Internet now working! (hopefullly for you too)

The other method here also worked for me once - the one about deleting and re-introducing Airport into your network settings.

Hope one of thos works for you - it's been braining me!

I had this problem this morning on my Mac Air and quickly fixed it (thanks to this Post).

I have Symantec Norton 360 on my Mac. During the evening my Norton license expired and at the same time my Internet access dropped. Both wireless and hardwire.

I diabled the Firewall - connection blocking - no effect.

I disabled Norton Confidential and IT WORKED.

I will take a wild stab and say it's an annoying bug. My other Mac didn't have a problem when the Norton service expired so, go figure.

I did not read all of the posts to see if this solution has been posted but I was having the same issue and tried EVERYTHING on here. NOTHING worked. finally all I had to do was go to the apple icon and click on "software update" I had two updates available. I updated everything and once it was done I had no issues connecting. I put it in sleep mode, closed out of things, and shut my computer down (when I did any of these before I would run into issues conecting) I did all of this with not one problem connecting. Hopefully it's that easy for you too!

Thanks for your response. I did that with a mac genius at the Apple store in Grand Central. It worked for a bit. But what we learned in the process was that the cause of this was a DNS Changing virus that was extreamly deeply buried in the lap top somewhere. It was not the one that the DNS Changer virus Detecter could find. I ran that a lot and it could not detect it.

The final solution for me was to back up every thing and erase the drive and restore the system software (10.7). Now my 6 year old 17" MacBook pro runs like it is brand new. I am so relieved!

If you get the right Mac Genius this can be helped.

Just wanted to throw my solution in here in case it helps. The other day, my daughter had trouble connecting to our home network with her new MacBook pro when she came home from college and just today (after an update), my other daughter's iphone 5 (which had worked fine since she bought it) was having the same problem. Both would get an ip address from the router and say connected to our home network (WEP), but neither could surf. I solved the problem by going into the router settings and finding the device in the list. Both were listed as new-host-etc. I matched the ip addresses to figure out what was what and renamed the device in the router to match the device's actual name. The devices seem to think the connection is now secure and daughter one hasn't had the problem in a week and so far, so good with daughter #2.

I had the same problem, and this is what I did:

Go to Network Preferences > TCP/IP

Choose Manual DHCP (instead of the default Using DHCP)

Enter your preferred IP-Address (one that is not taken by any other device, consult your router)

Enter the correct Subnet Mask and Router-IP (again, consult your router's settings)

Click OK, and then Apply

It works for me, and maybe for you too.

For what it's worth I was having a problem where my daughter's MacBook Air would lose internet connectivity after 8:30pm everynight. I'd installed some parental control software (Netgear LPC) on the router but them removed it /turned it off. Strangely, it still seemed to be applying. It was only until I cleared a fixed IP Address I had for the MacBook Air on the router that it started working.
