MacBook won't connect to the internet!!!

I recently switch wireless service at home to At&t.

Since, my computer "connects" to my network, accepts my password, and shows full signal, but when I open Safari, or any other app that requires internet, I just get the "failed to open page because you are not connected to the internet" page.

My roommates connect to use our wireless network with their PC's just fine, and my Mac connects to other wireless service at school and work and works just fine.

I have been on the phone with At&t many times trying to troubleshoot and fix the problem. No success.

Apple charged me $49 to talk to them, with no success.

I HAVE ALREADY TRIED RESTARTING both my Mac and my router, I have reset the router, I have restored original settings in both Safari and my router, I have tried removing the security from our network in order to connect without a password, I have tried re-configuring the router to work with Macs....all no success.

I am very frustrated with the situation as I, like most people, require internet access for both school and work.

Any help, tips, or advice on the situation would be grateful.

Wow. Same problem. Like often happens when a Mac quirk shows up I just wasted hours of my life and finally got it to work. I'll share the steps I took. First it worked two days ago at the same coffee shop, the only thing that had changed was the password, however no matter how many times I entered the password in the different forms. Nothing. All I got was a not connected... due to the "self assigned IP address" message. I attempted the tricks that people posted here: 1) Turned off and back on the wi fi ... nothing 2) restarted the computer... nothing 3)I went into System Preferences > under TCP/IP I changed the Configure IPv4 to "Using DHCP Manually" and used an IP address close to the one from my other mac which was connected just fine... almost nothing... the green light went on and it said connected under wi fi in the left panel of the preferences... but no actual connection 4) I changed the Manual IP address to Match my working Connected Mac... almost nothing... the green light again went on and it said connected under "wi fi" in the left panel of the preferences... but no actual connection 5) I deleted "Wi Fi" from the left panel and recreated it using the + and - buttons on the bottom of the left pane and hit renew DHCP address, but it recreated the same 162... IP as before and still not working 6) I changed the from a 162... to a 192... nothing 2) I hit Renew DHCP Lease... nothing same IP.


Then...


Here's what finally worked: Again in System Preferences>Network> I turned Wi-Fi off, Went to Advanced>TCP/IP>Configure IPv4 and changed it to off, hit "OK", Highlighted Wi-Fi in the left column, hit the - sign on the bottom left, deleting it, then hit the + and created it. I got a message saying there is no assigned IP address so I went back into >advanced>TCP/IP and turned on Using DHCP, Hit "Renew DHCP Lease" and it finally created a brand new IP address 10..... and if finally F'n worked.


Jeez Apple get it together. This is a ridiculous problem.

What kind of router, where are you trying to connect, home or somewhere else? How many devices are connected to that router, and is there a wired port you can link into? Do you have the Ethernet adapter to test this? I highly recommend getting one if you don't.


My home network has a from ATT and it has problems with some apple devices. We have 3 laptops, 2 are apple and one HP. 2 iPhones and an iPad. A temp fix was to set up static IP on several of the devices, it's important to include the DNS entries.

YESS BDAqua. WHAT YOU SAID WORKED FOR ME PERFECTLY. Instead of joining it from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed. Before I went through network diagnostics and all of that stuff in system preferences, and then I tried the "Join Other Network" method, and now it works like a dream. Thank you BDAqua.

I found a solution! I called Apple, and here's their instructions:


Turn off your modem/router.


Turn off your airport wireless connection.


Drag the System Configuration file to the trash (Hard drive > Library > Preferences > at the bottom)


Shut down your computer


After about 3 minutes or so, turn on your modem until it's powered up fully.


On your computer, (do this quickly) hold down Command + Control + R and turn on your computer and immediately start holding down P in addition until you hear a second start up sound, and then let go. It should work perfectly after this! Good luck!!!!

I had the same issue, connected to wifi but no internet access. Everyone else in my household connected wiht no issues. After trying the solutions here still didn't work. Talked with applecare and we finally got it resolved. So in case all else fails try this.


Open finder

click GO

click Computer

click Macintosh HD (I'm on Lion, 10.7.5)

click Library

check folder Startupitems(in my case it was empty. If you have files move them to your desktop)

check folder Launchdaemons(move all files to desktop)

Last check folder LaunchAgents(move all files to desktop)

Logout and log back in.


Hopefully your back online. If so you can take the time to put certain files back in the folders to pinpoint which one causes the issue. Me personally I just deleted all the files since they weren't important. They were all updater files for certain applications.

Hello mayfi944 or others who have similar issues,


If your Macbook shows it has no issue with connecting to your home router or gateway router, then the problem may be there is a possible bug in OS X.


How do you know if your Macbook has no issue with connecting to your home router? just check http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.1/ etc. depending on your router's configuration.


If this is the case, you need reset your Macbook DNS cache. Something like


MacOS® 10.7 and 10.8


  1. Click Applications.
  2. Click Utilities.
  3. Double-click the Terminal application.
  4. Type the following command:sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponderUser uploaded file Warning: To run this command, you will need to know the computer's Admin account password.

MacOS 10.5 and 10.6

  1. Click Applications.
  2. Click Utilities.
  3. Double-click the Terminal application.
  4. Type the following command:
    sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

I had the same problem most of you have and I fixed it this morning. It's not a problem with the Mac Book or Lion it's a security issue with your wireless router. Most routers have a limit of how many computers/devices can connect to them (I have 2 Macs, an iPad, PS3, XBOX360, 2 smart phones). My new Mac Book Pro had many of the same symptoms and was competing with my other devices to connect. I found this website a while ago when I was setting up my "secure network" and went back to it today and it hit me! Just increase the maximum # of devices that are allowed to connect to my router.

(this works for almost all routers not just the wireless G) Follow the directions through #4 and that should do it.

I tried many of the solutions above. Here's what worked for me for my iMac to talk to my macbook.


The problem was the self-assigned ISP one which meant the mac couldn't go on the net, despite the airport connection showing ok.

First, I had to restore internet sharing.

Second, I think I'd been trying to use the IPv6 (under the TCP/IP protocol) all the time. But I found an ISP (101.114.152.142) somewhere in the settings, and copied it to IPv4 (maybe because the macbook only has version 10.6.3?), and bingo. Miracles never cease.
