my iMac is apparently infected with software that displays black borders around text, dialog boxes and icons. It also displays a box that types out each step I take with the mouse or keyboard, and it speaks these steps too.
It sounds as if you may have turned on VoiceOver. You should be able to turn it off with Fn-Command-F5.

You have activated VoiceOver. Use Command + F5 keys to deactivate.
