Do I need to backup my data before replacing my hard drive? (mid-2012 MacBook Pro)

I've ordered a SSD to replace my HDD in a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. The plan is to do a clean install of Mojave, then migrate only the necessary files to the SDD once the hardware is installed. I purchased a 1TB SSD and enclosure from OWC. (also, 16 GB of memory and SATA cable).

Prior to physically replacing the hard drive, should I back up my programs and other files? Am I at risk of losing my files by not doing so?

I plan to format the new SSD while connected to the computer externally and install Mojave. Then I will swap the hard drives. At that point, should i not be able to access my files from the HDD when connected externally (via SATA to USB enclosure), then pick and choose the files I want on my main drive (the newly installed SSD)?

I have 400 GB of movies and music on that HDD that I do not want living on my SDD, plus other random and not-so-random files. I would rather avoid having to buy a third hard drive to back up my files.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

As others have stated, backing up is essential. I keep both a Time Machine backup and clones. You can use a cloning software like SuperDuper! or CarbonCopy Cloner.

The advantage of the clone is that you can boot from it and use the system. So, if your hard drive fails you can just boot from the backup and keep on working until you have the time to repair or replace the internal drive. You can also drag and drop files with the clone because it is the identical file structure on your primary drive.

The advantage of TM is that it creates recursive backups, so you can restore a file or the entire drive from a certain point in time.

Thanks for responding. Maybe it is a silly question, but I have never replaced hardware before and wanted to confirm. Like I assumed, it's more of a protective measure and my data should be available for migration immediately after surgery.

I have found so many over-complicated lists of steps and rules* for this process, mixed with more straightforward and simple steps. Hard to know what to follow.
