I got an apple watch series 3 for christmas but can't seem to figure out how to set a sound for incoming messages. I understand that when my iphone is not locked or sleepiing it will go there first but even when the iphone is locked/sleeping all I get on the watch is the vibrating tap but no sound. I do see the incoming message and sender on the watch but I'd like to hear a sound. What I am doing wrong?
Apple Watch
On your iPhone
Go to
Watch>Notifications>Messages
Put it on Custom
Allow Notifications
Sound toggle on
Haptic toggle on
On your iPhone
Go to
Watch>Notifications>Mail
Put it on Custom
Allow Notifications
Click on the account in question
Show alerts from (name here) toggle it on
Sound toggle on
Haptic toggle on
Go to on your iPhone
Watch>Sounds & Haptics
choose your alert volume
Haptic Alerts toggle on
Choose between default or prominent
Make sure silent mode is not toggled on
On your iPhone
Go to
Watch>Notifications>Messages

On the watch go to Settings>Sound and Haptics. Is the Alert volume saet to highest, silent mode off.
On ethe phone go to the watch app>My Watch>Messages. I allow Notification On Is Sounds also on. Haptics should be on since you said you receive those
Thanks got it. Thing is though when I receive a text the "bell" sound is so low I can't hear it. I did check the volume in settings on the watch and it is up all the way?
Yes the sound is low.
It was louder before the Watch OS5 started in September
Hopefully they'll fix it in an update.
