audio voiceover for screen recording

I'm trying to record audio while I record my screen using Mojave. I have updated software, but the microphone option is not showing on the onscreen controls the way the Support article suggests. What am I doing wrong?

If you can't record audio after a macOS Mojave update check if QuickTime Player has access to your microphone.

Also navigate to Apple menu () > System Preferences, click Sound, then click Input. Make sure a microphone is selected, the Input volume is sufficient, and that the Input level is showing activity.
