I'm trying to record audio while I record my screen using Mojave. I have updated software, but the microphone option is not showing on the onscreen controls the way the Support article suggests. What am I doing wrong?
If you can't record audio after a macOS Mojave update check if QuickTime Player has access to your microphone.
Also navigate to Apple menu () > System Preferences, click Sound, then click Input. Make sure a microphone is selected, the Input volume is sufficient, and that the Input level is showing activity.

However, this still led me to the answer. I saw that QuickTime Player didn't have access to my microphone, so I found another posting that explained how to give it access.
Well, doing a video recording with audio using Screenshot (command + shift + 5) works for me when selecting the built-in mic. I don't know how one can create a screen recording with audio using QuickTime Player. If you have a link explaining how to do that it would be useful to post it here.

i'm actually trying to use the shift-command-5 approach rather than QuickTime Player. However, I also tried QUickTime Player screen recording and adding microphone, and that is not working either.
You're welcome. After recently migrating from Yosemite it's nice not to fudge around with Soundflower/iShowU Audio Capture/etc. and Audio MIDI Setup.
Indeed. Although personally I never had a need to do a screen recording with or without narration.
