New SSD Format 2011 iMac

I just installed a new 2.0 TB SSD in my mid 2011 (12,1) 21.5" iMac to replace the original 500 GB HDD. The instructions recommended formatting the new disk with APFS but when I boot to recovery (cmd-opt-r) and select disk utility APFS is not a format option. After format I plan to recover from my Time Machine backup.

You must be using High Sierra or later to format APFS.
