Bringing HDMI signal INTO MacBook Pro?

Is there a way I can bring an HDMI signal (from a camera) into a MacBook Pro? Ostensibly to be recorded using OBS or something similar.

The idea is to capture the data stream from the camera directly to an external hard drive connected to the MacBook Pro.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated,

Ben

Mmm. I've used Firewire, years ago. I'll take a look at it again. I believe USB 3 is just as fast. But I would still need some kind of adapter unit to get the data into the Mac ... which would be the Thunderbolt ... which is the same speed or better than the Firewire, actually. So I think I'm looking for some kind of conversion setup to go from the HDMI output of the camera to the Thunderbolt input of the Mac. Which is probably something like a Black Magic video card (encased in some kind of unit).

Okay. Thank you Grant, for your help, much appreciated.

Thank you Grant,

The video stream will be coming from a Panasonic GH5 and/or an EVA-1. It's because we are shooting in a reactor lab. The camera(s) is locked down in the reactor room. We don't want to have to go in to do any function adjustments – exposure, frame rate, etc. And I won't be there sometimes to do the SD card wrangling. One of the fellows has set up a capture system on his PC which has been working so far with a Sony FS700 (but only HD). And it hasn't been crucial to get the best imagery. We're moving to a much more important phase and it's time to get THE best imagery. And with the bump to 4K I want to make sure we have the better capture setup.

A camcorder that can store it own Video already does all the high-powered work for you. No black magic or any other expensive card is required. Don't assume you should accept Video -- that is too hard.

Consumer-grade cameras often have the 4-pin version of the Firewire connector on board. Your high-end camera does not seem to. But if you have to replace the camera for higher resolution, look for one with a fireWire output (or maybe they are using USB-3 for this now).

Video data is a really fast and completely unforgiving data stream. Having a camcorder send you video is complete nonsense.

It should send you the stuff it would have stored on its data card: digitized, packetized and ready to be processed.

A camcorder with a FireWire/IEEE1394 connector can send you standard pre-packetized video data with NO time constraints attached, and you can save that on any-old-computer with no time constraints whatsoever. No special hardware other than a FireWire/IEEE1394 interface is required, and older Macs still have one, standard. Newer Macs can add one with a simple adapter.
