Face recognition in photos on iphone

A few months ago I was able to identify people in the photos I held on my iphone. The phone is now able to identify people in new photos, as long as they are people that I have already identified. I can't find a way of adding the name of anyone new whose photo I add to my photo collection on the phone, and I can't manually identify anyone the phone doesn't automatically identify. I must have been able to identify people in photos at some stage, but I can't remember how I did that. Searching the internet for a solution has been unsuccessful, and I would be pleased to hear from anyone how I can add IDs to faces in my photo collection

Try to find a photo of a person you would like to add to the people album (a photo with a face that should have been recognized as a face).

View this photo enlarged, then swipe up, so you can see the People section below the photo. There should be a thumbnail with the face. Tap the face to open the album of the person and tap "Add Name".

You will now have a new album for this person.

The section "Related" should be shown below the sections "People" and "Places". That means, Photos did not yet scan the new photos for faces and places or could not find any faces in the photos.

Are you using iCloud Photos or are the photos stored locally on the iPhone? Did your iPhone have time to run the face recognition after you imported the photos? Has been connected to power and turned on?

This does not work for me. If I add a new photo of a face I have already identified then the phone recognises that face. However if I add a photo of someone who I have not previously identified then the procedure you suggest takes me to a section called Related and tells me no related found. My problem is I cannot assign a name to any new face, and, as I have older photos where I have assigned names, there must have been a time when I could do this. What I need to know is how to assign an ID to a new photo

As a test I added two photos at the same time. One of these had 3 people in and 2 of those had been identified in earlier photos. The third person had never been identified by me. The second photo only contained an image if this third person. The phone identified the two people in the first photo who I had previously assigned names to, but failed to identify the third person, and did not give me a thumbnail of this image to add a name. For the second photo the phone found no related image and also failed to give me a thumbnail of the face. As the phone recognised 2 of the people in the first photo then the phone must have had timevtonrunnface recognition.

These photos are held locally on my phone. I hope this helps to identify a solution
