HomePod or packaging doesn’t have a HomeKit code. How do I connect it as a Home accessory?

We bought our HomePod a few months after the initial release. It works fine as an ApplePlay speaker for podcasts or iTunes. But I’m just now trying to connect it to the Home app as an accessory. I can’t find a HomeKit setup code on the device or on the packaging, either as a QR code or an 8 digit code. The Serial number and UPC codes on the back aren’t 8 digits and the bar code doesn’t scan. But the box says it supports HomeKit accessory control. I’ve tried the info available through Apple support but don’t see anything that helps.

Were HomeKit setup codes only included in later devices?

See Set up and use HomePod - Apple Support. The setup process for HomePod is different, and it doesn't require a code.

The HomePod should automatically show up on the home application after you set it up as throes is how you enable passwords and update the HomePod.

If the HomePod is not showing up on the page when you open the home application then it may not be a favourite accessory. To find the HomePod in the home application, select the rooms tab at the bottom of the screen then swipe left or right until you find the room that the HomePod was assigned to.

If none of these work then try resetting the HomePod and setting it up again.

What it says on my boxes is "HomeKit accessory control", not "HomeKit accessory". See https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/02/09/despite-being-a-homekit-accessory-homepod-does-not-work-within-custom-triggers-or-scenes for example.

No, I don't work for Apple. This a user to user support forum. I do have a pair of HomePods, though not any other HomeKit accessories.
