I've currently got a 4TB hard drive but I need more room and speed so.... could I get a 5+TB SSD to work well? Or are there possible problems? But then again I could ask (more or less) the same question about a 2012 MacBook Pro or a Late 2011 iMac or any model where the storage or RAM is upgradeable. Is there any practical limit (aside from cost and physical dimensions) for SSDs to go into any modern computer?
With the advent of APFS in High Sierra and Mojave, aside from
the optimization for use with SSDs, it increased the amount of
data that can be accessed to the order of "petabytes". FWIW,
1 petabyte = 1000 terrabytes.
So, the only limit to what you can install is physical size, cost, and what
is actually available.
However, personally, I think there is a downside of having massive amounts
of internal storage and that is the time that would be involved in backing
up and restoring such massive drives in the event of issues. I prefer to keep things
on the smallish side to facilitate speed of back up and restore.
FWIW, the largest SSDs for a 2015 iMac OWC lists are 2TB.
I don't know if that is the maximum but one would think they would have larger ones available if possible.
FWIW, I agree. The largest internal drive I have on any of my Macs is 2TB and I don't use most of that.
