Apple magic keyboard with numeric keypad disconnects when I disconnect the power cable

Question

I purchased an Apple magic keyboard with numeric keypad. I unsealed it, connected it with the lightning cable. Works perfectly.

I disconnect the lightning cable, and the keyboard is disconnected. Any ideas why it does not stay paired.

I'm running: 10.13.6 (17G4015)

I have a Macbook Pro, and a Macbook Air, I tried on both, same issue.

I have another Magic Keyboard (without the numeric keys), that works fine via bluetooth.
