Bluetooth earbuds won't pair with MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)

Will MacBook pro on OS X 10.13.6 run Bluetooth 5?

I just got new Bluetooth 5 earbuds. They work perfectly with my iPhone 8, but I can't get the MacBook to see them. The MacBook connects just fine to my old headset. This is what I got -

first time you connect to the computer you need to put the headset into pairing mode

otherwise it will not be discoverable, how you do that should be in the documentation of the headset

Can it just be "not connected"? If so, yes.

I turned off the bluetooth on the phone and it worked - thank you!
