Thunderbolt to USB question

Early 2011 13" MBP - Has one Firewire 800, one Thunderbolt and two USB's

Shortly after the warranty period one of my USB ports failed to recognize anything connected to it. It would still provide power to charge phone, or spin up an external drive etc., but nothing else. The remaining USB port worked normally.

Troubleshooting with support seemed to narrow the issue to a motherboard issue. Okay, well as long as the other port worked, not going to worry about it too much. I pretty much only use USB for external storage and my Time Machine backups, and the occasional USB dongle for a mouse.

Now in 2019, the other port is starting to act up, and may in fact failed. No other issues with the MBP.

I've update to Sierra 10.6, and this is no longer my primary computer, but I'll like to use it as long as I can for hobbies, editing, etc. It's not worth a major repair at 8 years old now.

Which brings me to my question.

Can the Firewire or Thunderbolt ports be used for a USB 2.0 connection or USB hub via an adapter?

Seems to be a lot of adaptors for everything but what I'm looking for. Apple accessories aren't readily searchable for older hardware.

Any thoughts?

look up Kanex Model: KTU10. I bought mine 4 years ago for $80.00 who knows nowadays. It connects to the one thunderbolt port and has two connectors a USB3 (get you away of crappy USB2) and esata. It has never failed me but I don't think you can boot externals from it. I just save data to external Lacie rugged drives or extremely fast Lexar flash drives.

I looked up Kanex KTU10 and found them new ranging from $96.00 to $107.00. I could not find a simple Thunderbolt to USB, as it appears USBc is confused with a newer version of Thunderbolt. None the less, looks like the KTU10 is the one and only true device that connects the original Thunderbolt 1 to a USB 3.0

I found a used one on eBay for about $50, it just arrived and works wonderfully. Now I have my USB back on my MBP.
