Eventhough I elected to not back up the device through itunes, it happened anyway. Is this typical?

The only way to elect not to back up an iOS device using iTunes is to turn on iCloud backups on the device.
Please try actually describing your problem and what you've done to troubleshoot it. Also, please keep in mind there is a difference between a "backup" and a "restore".
Well, my wife bought a new phone and she backs it up and restored via icloud. I took the old iphone and basically did a restore to earase the data and unchecked the box to back up first but itunes backed up anyway. There is no problem, just not sure why it backed up after selecting not to do so. I did delete the back up in preferences.
