Can someone recommend a good hard drive cleaner that's easy to use for a non tech person like the now discontinued Dr. Cleaner for a MacBook Pro.

You should not use any third party app that claims to clean, protect. boost performance, etc.
You don't need one. Macs have been doing file defragmentation for over a decade until the whole process was rendered moot by the appearance of SSD style drives. Any other cleaning is done by the operating system. You should only use a drive tool if you have a very specific issue that you know needs addressing.
