Using a Mac Mini on Dell U4919DW Ultrawide Monitor.

(A part of this was posted in another forum but it is more relevant here).

I just purchased a Mac Mini 2018 and Dell U4919DW Ultrawide Monitor. I should be able to get 5120x1440 Resolution out of this setup, but at best I can get 3840x1080.

I am connected via the Dell-included USB-C cable. I tried with the included HDMI cable but it too did not work.

Connecting the monitor to my PC via Display Port Cables DID work - I was able to get full 5120x1440 resolution at full 60hz. Just not on my new Mac Mini.

I called Dell, and their technical support was a complete joke. The lady on the phone basically said "If it works on a PC, it works", without much else to offer.

I called Apple and the tech, David, tried alot harder, easily spending about 20 minutes with me trying to find the problem. (Apple tech support is why they always win my business). He was not able to solve the problem but has created a case # and escalated this to Apple Engineers. By Apple and Dell's own documentation, I should be able to get 1440 lines of resolution in my setup.

Has anyone here experienced anything similar? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Got it working with the USBC-C cable that came with the monitor and the Moshi USB-C to DisplayPort cable I purchased today. I use the sound from the Mac mini (as it stands beneath my Philips monitor). I had to use SwitchResX to enforce these resolutions. Without it I can't pick the 1560x1440 for both 'screens'. Anyway, happy for now but I hope Apple would release a fix soon.

After reading this thread:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8641919

It seams that it is a issue with mac os(Mojave) and computers with intel integrated graphic ship only.

Because with windows booted natively from this machines the full resolution (5120x1440) is achieved.

Now my question is : is it the same issue with other monitors with the same resolution (Philips 499P9H, Samsung CHG90)

Perhaps it is too earlier because this one are not really on the market at this time

Thanks for your answers

Quick update:

I am able to get around the issue and run my screen in high resolution, but only in extended desktop mode, which is 2 virtual monitors @ 2560x1140 each. This is actually perfect for me as stated earlier, but it of course should run in normal model at 5120x1440.

The Moshi cable does not solve the problem by the way. Don't waste your money or time.

I received another call from Apple a few days ago, and had me generate some special configuration files and upload it to them. Apple is on the case!

To me, the problem is with the OS. The Mac Mini + Dell Hardware combo works in extended desktop mode perfectly, so to me, I'm thinking OS bug.

Hi Mark,

Thank you so much, as mentionned AMMMAC, it does feels AMAZING, finally !

You've made my day !

I was struggling with this since a couple of months, after purchasing both an LG 34" LG34WK95U and then a Philipps 49" 499P9H. Both not being able to display more than 1080 vertical, which is...sh*t for extensive desktop usage.

Using XRez screen scalling utility available on the web didn't help.

Your hints on dual USB-C + HDMI display with PBP Mode activated on the Philipps 49" works just fine at twice 2560x1440, where I was limited to one 3180x1080 since a couple of months, with much pain on my eyes.

I could set the menu bar on the left screen in order to avoid having the spotlight search fiel and all menu icons on the right far end...with an 120cm wide screen it matters to keep mostly focus on the center part of the screen.

I could set two (identical) 3120x1440 wallpapers to cover the desk field.

I am not to happy about the white balance between both side of the screen. It seems HDMI output a bit brighter than the USB-C output. So far I couldn't find a way to balanced it. But I am really not into the color settings of the monitor preferences.

Any inputs on setting equivalent brightness is welcomed.

You made my day ! So I can add Philipps 49" 5120x1440 screen real estate with new Macmini's, and on top of that Philipps stand seems of higher quality and design vs. LG's stand. And it has an integrated camera...Windows Hello....which means has to be supported by MacOS Mojave, for the moment with 10.14.4 the camera is displayed on PhotoBooth, not on FaceTime Yet.

Hopefully I will soon get a "double iMac 27" with no screen bezels at all, allowing much productivity improvement, togetherwith an integrated camera.

Please Apple, hurry up supporting DELL's, LG' Philipps...and SMasung's new 5K2K 49" Ultrawide screens !

Many users who have been waiting much too long (2013-2019) for those new mac mini's will thank you for it!

Hi there!

I just phone called Apple to ask whether this was a known issue that will be fixed when the next MacOS comes next month. Unfortunately he could neither confirm it was a known issue, nor that it will be fixed. We just had to wait and try.

But we can hope for a fix in the next MacOS. If you sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program (free and open for everyone) https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/ you are able to install the latest beta of the coming MacOS Catalina.

Can you or someone else in this thread check if the full resolution is working with the current beta? I have the beta installed, but I have not bought the screen yet because of those problems. If the beta does not work with the monitor it is possible to revert back to the stable MacOS you had.

This was just the explanation I was looking for. Many thanks Mark!

One minor addition that may prove useful for other owners of this monitor. I'd followed all of the above but was still had a colour mismatch which was most obvious as a vertical line on any window that crossed the PBP boundary at the centre of the monitor.

This was despite having selected the "Dell U4919DW" profile in System Preferences/Displays/Colour for both PBP screens: Dell U4919DW (1) and Dell U4919DW (2). Quite by accident I noticed one afternoon that the full list of available profiles included three duplicate entries for "Dell U4919DW". You'll need to deselect 'Show profiles for this display only' to see the full list on each of (1) and (2).

For reasons that I've not been able to fathom, the default was for profiles that were named the same but not quite identical. Once the same profile is selected (fairly quickly by trial and error) on each side (1) and (2), the screen finally delivers.

Thanks again, Mark

Daniel

@killmall - you might want to go back and ensure you're actually getting you recommended daily allowance of pixels with this setup.

I tried SwitchResX and had no joy, so tried ResXtreme and while I managed to get the display to scale to 5120x1440 when I went into SwitchResX to work out what the display was actually working at, it turns out it's 3840x1080 being scaled up in software - hence it looking blurry on my screen compared to "real" 5120x1440 in side by side mode (with two cables).

Once you've tried PbP/Side by Side let me know if I'm wrong, but I think we're still looking for a solution from Apple.

Hi everyone - any chance that the Mojave update (10.14.6) that just came out (I noticed it today and updated my Mac mini and a Macbook Air) may have resolved the Phillips 49 inch issue, enabling the display to run the way it should at 5120x1440?

Would love to switch back my PC to my 75 Vizio and get the Mac mini with the Blackmagicpro back together with the Philips 49er. Peace.
